AVG 8.0 not free?

I got notified by my free install of AVG 7.5 to upgrade to version 8.0.

AVG 8.0 doesn't appear to have a free version...

It looks as if AVAST is the way to go for free anti-virus software...

G'day,

There isn't a free version of AVG 8.0 yet, but it is in the pipeline. Plus it will provide additional protection to that currently provided by AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5. Of course, the new free version still won't provide the same level of protection and functionality as provided by AVG's commercial products like the AVG Internet Security 8.0 suite.

What's wrong with purchasing a copy? We used to use the Free edition at the Asperger Services Australia network -- it came pre-loaded with two workstations they purchased.

The users on the network seemed happy with it, and from my perspective (as network administrator) it was doing the job, so when the update was due, we purchased a 5-user site license.

We recently purchased another 5-user site license, and so far, so good.

AVG 8 is free now. Just verified it on their website.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 is available. The new version provides: Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and LinkScanner Search-shield. See www.avgfree.com.au

Of course, we'd prefer people to switch to the even better protection available from the commercial AVG 8.0 products.

I found AVG 8 on Vista 64 to be a little bloated compared to 7.5.

It also still runs as a normal 32 bit application. Would love to see a 64 bit version (as in native) :D

Looks pretty nice, though I'd like to know how to remove the Link Scanner Toolbar off the browser. I realised I don't need it after installing and playing.

EDIT: oh crap...View|Toolbars|AVG Toolbar

but even though I've switched it off, does that mean it is still loaded up when I open FF?

Is it possible to get a key that can be reused on multiple computers? I work fixing peoples computers and its really getting annoying downloading it over and over just for a new key.

If you have to use a virus scanner, use avast.

It is far superior, not least with actually catching viruses, and performance wise.

And you base that on what ? I have used both and found them to be on a par with each other. But stayed with AVG because V8 also has a spyware sweeper.

Kaspersky is supposed to be the best virus scanner (according to a review done by PC Authority) and AVG to be the best free scanner.

I base it on my experience as a security consultant, and seeing avg let several viruses go free, or mistakenly identify things as a virus and block access, with avast being superior at detecting a virus even if it is not in tis definition, having firewall capabilities without needing a firewall, and using almost no overhead. Also it speaks.

Well I base my opinion on years of using avg. I used to double check on avg for at least a year or more by running on line scans which found nothing. so I don't bother any more.

As I said I found avg and avast to be on a par with each other after running avast on one of my other computers for at least 2 years.

But none of this matters, as people will continue to use both, picking which ever one floats their boat.

BTW I am glad avg does not talk if there is one thing I hate it's software talking at me. ;)
