Who the hell are you?

I use PeerGuardian ( http://phoenixlabs.org/ ) and it stops a hell of a lot of access from/to my machine.

But the troubling thing is how often the little icon blinks at me.

I open Steam and I get a heap of connections to Limelight Networks ( http://www.limelightnetworks.com/ ), but wait a sec! I am connecting to Steam/Valve, right?
It also used to connect to Offer Optimizer ( http://www.webhelper4u.com/offeroptimizerads/index.html ) but that now longer appears to happen.

There is other instances where I browse sites and get completely, apparently, unrelated connections spawning.

On a related note using adblock for FireFox makes you aware of all sorts of extra links/scripts/images a site pulls into itself when you access it.

My point is that when you visit a site, or open a program, you don't know what is happening in the background.

Out of interest, does anyone know why this sort of thing happens? I understand ads etc, but Steam to Limelight?

Valve uses 'Limelight Networks' (who are the World's Leading Content Delivery Network - to deliver updates on their behalf via Steam.

I am well versed on adaware, I haven't had spyware for a long time, but thanks anyway.

What I was trying to point out is that when you use something like adblock it makes you realise that when you visit a site (eg this one), more often than not it pulls all sorts of other links/scripts/graphics from other sites. And when you go through the links in adblock you wonder where and why all this extra stuff comes from.

Stonky - the funny thing is that I still block Limelight and all my games are up to date on Steam.

There is a site that has what they call the "spamdemicmap" (do a search on google) they track how they get your e-mail through ads and then send you spam. Not only that but who is buying these ads. As far as Lime light goes, it just sounds like limewire too much. They claim to have no spyware, a few of my clients keep getting into trouble with the program (long story), and suddenly every computer that has it seems to be riddled with it. Adware, spyware, and malware.... its all bad.

ValarClan -

You are getting confused...

Limelight Networks is just* a content delivery network
*(although they are admittedly a damn good one)
They do not install any programs or applications on your computer what-so-ever*.

'That' sort of thing is done by peer to peer companies(eg Limewire/Bearshare)install them at your peril.

Limelight simply delivers content in a faster better way over the internet using internet protocol(there is no spyware /adware or anything else involved - they deliver only what the content provider tells them to.

Think of them as a Fed-Ex (for the internet)...they simply deliver from A-B as fast as possible.

*So for the sake of this thread Valve says "deliver 'this' and the CDN delivers...what they deliver is what you asked for -nothing more, nothing less...

Don't shoot the messenger dude.. :-)
