XP Activation - What a headache

Now, before anyone posts up "Go and buy the software blah blah".. STFU. :P

I actually OWN a legit XP Pro cd. So for those with the smart arsed comments, go and get fucked.

Now, onto my issue.

I format a fair bit, its not really much trouble to me as in backup etc but what shits me the most is the activation. I know its a toll free number and all that. But its just a pain in the arse.

I'm after a workaround for it which will still enable me to download updates.

Just so ya know, I do have all versions etc, but I want to run my original. I have used reset on several machines in the past (not mine/not online pcs) but I want to run updates as well. SP2 fixes whatever reset does..

Is there some other way I can go about it, or should I just use the XP Corp I have here and be done with it. (dunno if i can update with corp though)

I don't think this breaks any forum rules.. Oh well if it does. I feel its a legit question and warranted one.

Cheers
:)

A workaround?

Get Acronis True Image. Install everything you want, set it all up. Activate XP.

Then run that program and make an image file of your windows partition.

Now, next time you go to format, just run that and install the image. You'll have a formatted drive and a fresh copy of activated XP waiting for you in approximately 3 minutes.

You mention that you want to download updates, yet you use the telephone activation method.

Is there a reason you can't activate it over the internet?, seeing it takes all of 5 seconds.

I have activated it so many times it wont let me anymore. I have also registered at the same time, several times hoping that it would remember my information and allow me to activate it.

Squiddy, I have that program.. How the hell do I put it back on a drive if no OS is on it ? (dumb q i know, but i'm stumped) lol

I think I just read your post wrong squiddy...

When I format, I format for reasons of cluster size change etc. So I won't have an OS on the drive...

Can it make a bootable copy ?? Can it see a raid array as the OS drive ??

I doubt I have any other way of doing it other than ringing them up, or using corp version but i'm unsure about updates still.

with TrueImage it allows you to make a recover cd (bootable). you know the drill--boot with cd--select what you want (image wise)--let it run and your set.
the cd is remarkable, the way it's presented. you'll think your still in windows.

never tried it with raid, don't thin, but I could be wrong.k you'll have an issue

Maybe you should shut your fucking cake hole you prick...

I hate cunts who just think "EVERYONE" uses copied versions of windows. As I stated earlier, I have an ORIGINAL and I also have all other versions. However I wanted to run my original. Excuse me for being fucking honest about what i have etc even if it does dob myself in for having copyrighted software.

I have included two pictures of my original disk to shut cunts like you up... Please enjoy the viewing, then commit.

jdee71,

The problem with that solution is will the bootable CD actually see my raided drives ?? I am running 4 raptors in raid as a windows drive. (onboard sata)

PS: I'm sure you're not a prick, cunt or anything else I called you.. I'm just sick of people assuming that everyone uses copies.

Phiber-0ptic - After you have successfully activated once, go into c:\windows\system32\ and grab the file wpa.dbl

store it somewhere safe, that IS your activation file.

next time you reinstall, aslong as you havent changed the hardware, after you've done your install, copy that file back across into c:\windows\system32

you MAY need to do this outside of windows, it may not work if you do it from your booted windows system.

in theory, then all you'll need to do it run the activation wizard, which will open up, and tell you that you've already activated this copy of windows...

....in theory.

Will he be able to view the file from DOS or wherever seeing the drive would more than likely be a NTFS partition.

If you were comfortable with linux, you should use ubuntu or similar to make a bootable cd and copy the file over from there.

Glad you didn't take offense iamthemaxx. :)

About the easiest solution I can find is having a spare IDE drive with windows already installed on it... (and activated)

When required, plug in said drive, boot up, format to whatever I want. (cluster sizes etc) then possibly from the IDE drive, load a ghost image (activated already) to the array or whatever program. Unplug IDE, reboot to raid and viola.

Anyone see any problems with that solution ?

Yes, I thought the idea was to REDUCE the annoyance level. Just fucking ring Microsoft, you may even get a chick on the line :)

If your going to go down the ghost road, just use DVD's if you have a burner. $5 will backup OS + a whole heap of other stuff.

As for insulting max, well, your fucked.

yes, there are quite a number of NTFS drivers for DOS boot disks.

along with the windows recovery console, which i think is posisble to do it via aswell....
