I ran Beta 2 on 2 machines.

Had issues installing it on both. Had issues running it on both.

Both machines now run windows XP.
I am now buying a Mac.

LOL You made an Operating System choice on a beta product?!

I guess Microsoft didn't make it clear enough that the Preview was for tech savvy / expert users - and did not reflect the quality of a final product.

Enjoy your Mac.

I completely dislike the direction it has taken. Unless they start rolling back "features", I'm not using it.

Did they end up implementing the new install method, where it basically uses WinPE to lay down a bare-bones image?

I wasn't really keen on the new sidebar, for a long time. It's slowly starting to grow on me, now that widescreen monitors have become a lot more popular.

What are your machine specs?

And what is your system score in Vista? Screenshot? Just saw the screenshot!
So they have made a change to that section have they?

Edited by iamthemaxx: 18/7/2006 7:45:08 PM

The machine specs are based on a Dell Latitude D810 Laptop.

I'm about to post how well an AMD X2 with 2GB DDR and a 7800GT Rates.

johnsee I understate your frustration at some features being rolled back just for Vista to ship on time. I really do. And I have made it very clear on the Microsoft BT Forums that the approach of chopping out features to ship a product on time is not good.

At the end of the day neither Beta Testers or Technology Adoption Partners can tell Microsoft to put those features in - actually a fair few features in Windows Vista that were either returned or reworked are all thanks to vocal beta testers - of which I consider myself one.

Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows
Windows Vista Build 5472 Overview & Screenshot Gallery 1
Overall, build 5472 looks solid. As with build 5456, I'll be using this as my sole OS going forward, and it's interesting how much more possible it is to do this than was the case with Beta 2, which performed horribly on my desktop and notebook systems. Things have definitely taken a turn for the better. If I find out anything else interesting about this build, I'll update this page. For now, however, I intend to just use the thing and see how it performs. So far, so good.

I'm a little out of the loop, kr0z, are they still making it possible to use Vista with a predominanly Win2k-based UI, in terms of start menu, theme, no anoying widgets or 'task lists' in various explorer windows, etc?

Hi Nich - yes good news for you, the "classic" non Aero accelerated UI (Windows 2k style) is still available. So you can be running Vista without all the theme's and transparencies. (-:

LPG would probably be better for it than our ULP :p

Ta kr0z. I'm keen to try Vista out when it matures a little more, but I was a tad worried that my crusty old 9600 Pro wouldn't cope too well with Aero.

Actually, I could probably get used to Aero, and themes again, as long as I can keep the rest of the OS/UI reasonably familiar (familiar in terms of 2k, not XP's fluffiness >.<) : )

Hello Nich... an ATI 9600 Pro will run Aero and transparencies just fine actually! (-: But if Aero and its special effects are not for you there is the Basic Theme - similar to Aero but no transparency - its actually very usable too!

I think after playing with Vista - once its released - you will want to move onto Aero after a while. But the choice is there. You can customise "the works" in the UI - to suit your taste.

I have just received information from a credible source at Microsoft that features and requests are already being gathered for Windows Vienna - which is a release of Windows to follow Windows Vista.

Hmmm,

I'm liking the build that Microsoft has sent us here at uni. It's a lot more stable and can play Media Player without having to crash or freeze the desktop.

Though I'm still waiting on the public release for RC1 or RC2 if they do get round to it...

What build did you receive? Was it Beta 2?

If so I can assure you that the build I'm currently testing is many times better than beta 2 - I think you will be impressed with RC1 when its released!
