XP Installation issues

I'm trying to install XP off a legit XP Pro CD with SP1 for my gf. Every time it goes to install it it says "cannot copy blah blah file because it's not a valid XP image" it mentions something about the file copied to the HDD isnt a valid image. I've tried both Home SP2 and Pro SP1 (both legit), it gets through the installation then will either say NTLDR is missing or will come up with a blue screen. The computer is very new (around 2 months old), does anyone have any ideas?

Gigabyte Ep35-DS3P
2gb Corsair ram
8600GT video card
onboard sound
600w psu

Are you perhaps re-installing instead of properly formatting the harddrive because I assume the hdd you are using already has XP installed on it from a previous system/setup.

It was a full format. I downloaded Knoppix on my laptop and burnt it to CD and it wouldnt mount properly in her system so we've put it down to faulty DVD drive :(

you got me squidy. its hard to say with the information at hand. the fact that its spitting NTLDR is missing indicates that there could be a problem with either your HDD or your DVD drive. however, in my experience, NTLDR almost always gets corrupt after a period of time, or maybe never, but ive never seen one that say something like that after a clean install. again, it points to one of the 2 problems above. id check the cable for your DVD drive (a la ashton mill's problem) or try with another HDD to see if the problem occurs again.

Brand new ram was the culprit. Corsair 2x1gb 4-4-4-12 and no matter what setting it gave errors. I'd try one stick at a time and it was fine, but put 2 in at once and it errored out all across the 2gb. 1500+ errors in the first 10 seconds...

That's interesting to find out, I had the exact same situtation about 6 months ago. I tried a different HDD, Different Optical drive, even a different CPU, but did not give the Memory a second thought. Eventually i scrapped the board and replaced with a newer ASUS board, but with different memory, Fixed the problem then But-now I'm wondering where I have put that memory!.
This is why forums are great, you learn even from other peoples methods.

If each stick individually works fine it may be a compatibility issue. I've had problems in the past with Gigabyte P35 boards and Corsair RAM. Is there a more current BIOS available, or have you dried dual channel but in different DIMM slots?

Corsair ram is fantastic when it works.

bt its failure rate is GYNORMOUS!

i had some $400 ram die on me in 1 day.

same thing, thousand errors or so in first 1% of test.
