SceptreCore: what basis do you have to accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about? Because my opinion differs from yours?

For what I need to use my computer for, and for my experiences with both XP and Vista, I will choose XP in an instant. I am informed, and have experience, with both environments.

Don't make accusations you've got no grounding in.

Well it seems like your the type of 'informed' person as you say, who's only informed enough to turn the computer on, play solitaire and browse the internet.

Or perhaps I'm a software developer, who's found the best platform to do most of his work on is Linux, and uses windows only occasionally, and mostly for games, and finds none of the features available in vista to offer anything over XP, especially if moving up to Vista would require a hardware upgrade.

Just because I didn't specify what I did with a computer doesn't mean I don't use them as a serious tool, and know what I need and what I don't need.

Oh dear, how dare Microsoft try to protect their multi million dollar investment.

If I ever have a problem with my legally purchased OS being flagged as suspect I'll ring them up and have the error corrected.

Saying that this hurts legitimate people is like saying having unique car keys hurts people who buy a car and loose their keys!

XP - MS Sticker is your license right?

Well I have a licensed sticker on my rig for XP and that was fine till one day I went to a LAN and it told me my hardware had changed (which it had not), so I ended up on the phone to India instead of playing with my mates. Luckily I got an english speaker who was understandable and got running again.

So because of this it Never fails WGA or Windows Updates.

hacker/crackers will bypass these new measures anyways in due time

Hah, I'm not one to advocate piracy (though for the simple reason of being able to not spend $$$$ and still get the programs and stuff I'm after,
I greatly do), not long after this, there will be a fix.

It's only natural.

People would buy XP if it was still available? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Bullshit, it was available for many years and did people buy it then? no, so why say because its not available people will start buying it now?

Anyhow, it's MS' software, if they want to add nagware then I say good on them.

Really Squiddy? Is that why all but a couple of PCs we've sold since vista's release have had xp requested. Every second person with a Vista laptop asks if they can have XP on it instead.

I can't imagine people with pirated copies having auto updates enabled anymore after sp3. As usual it will just hurt the actual genuine users.

I was referring to "Maybe concentrating on fixing up their hunk of shit OS Vista, instead of cracking down on pirated copies of Windows XP would be the way to go... People might actually still be BUYING Windows XP if Microsoft still sold it, instead the options are pirate it or buy Vista, hmmm..."

Buying a premade system and requesting XP is vastly different to actually purchasing just the software, most people just pirate it. Saying if they still sold it it would let the pirates buy it is a long stretch. If they didnt buy it for 6-7 years then why would they decide to turn around and buy it now? hiding behind the "well we cant buy it cos its not sold anymore" doesnt wash too well.

Squidy: So? I finally got around to buy StarCraft now that its like $10.

Edit: Why would someone want to buy a "hunk of shit"? And 6-7 years ago, 20 year olds would have been 14 year olds with little money, now they might have a job you, maybe.

But its okay, just make assumptions about everything like it's the word of god, it's what RIAA and MPAA does.

So making an assumption pirates wont pay for software is wrong? Maybe someone should redefine the term for you?

Anyhow Starcraft is still for sale, you bought it. That's not what I'm talking about. Read what I said again.

As for your example of pirates being 20 and not having jobs when they were younger so not having the money, where did they get the computer from? Ok, assume its a parents computer, did the parents stupidly go and buy a computer without an OS with every single one of those 20 year olds? And if money was an object, what about Linux, its free, could they afford that?

i say MS has a right to do what it wants to its IP, even if we dont like it. its almost like me telling you what to do with your own computer.

so to those who would crack or use a pirated version of XP/Vista, i say, why dont you use those? i mean, your the reason this nagware is going to be in place. i payed for my vista and xp. i laugh myself to tears when i see someone who has an illegal copy who complains about the WGA pop ups that come up every few minutes or so.

imo, if you are too cheap to buy it, live with the consequences. after all, you got it for free, so dont expect to get the world from it.

Of course they have the right.

Doesn't mean they are treating their customers with respect though.

If you own the OS you wont have a problem... and if you do its a Toll Free phone number and you can get it fixed (Iv had to do it for a friend) and you did say yes to the EULA dident you?

you can put this into context with something like World of Warcraft.

when you start it for the first time after a patch or an install, it makes you read the EULA, etc. the part im interested in is, "use as is." now, most of the ppl i know in that game are screaming for things to be fixed, like server lag and watever else they are whinging about. in the end though, that part of the agreement, that they agreed to, by playing the game in the first place, means that they have accepted any conditions and play the game "as is", regardless of any circumstances that might eventuate from server or software malfucntions.

so, like mr mustard said above, just live with it. i dont have a problem with that :)
