Is this going to be another retarded system that falsely flags users with legitimate copies?

I'm sure we all remember how *well* it went last time they tried something like this...

It shouldn't worry you unless you're using pirated software.

Because, you know, it won't affect you if you (or your employer or whoever) actually paid for your copy.

Although perhaps they should be to figure out WHY people are stealing it (price), rather than simply trying to treat the symptoms.

It's just fucking ridiculous anyway - MICROSOFT DON'T EVEN SELL WINDOWS XP ANYMORE - they officially stopped selling Windows XP on 30th June 2008.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-xp/future.aspx

Maybe concentrating on fixing up their hunk of shit OS Vista, instead of cracking down on pirated copies of Windows XP would be the way to go... People might actually still be BUYING Windows XP if Microsoft still sold it, instead the options are pirate it or buy Vista, hmmm...

get a better PC then because vista works fine for me.

you will find most of the time it is a user issue with vista.

Yes, because everyone can afford to buy a new pc every time Microsoft determine their old one is too old.

Fuck Vista, fuck Microsoft. Yeah, ok, it's doing an ok job now, hoo-fucking-ray, from my experience with it, I still think it's shit and hope to never use it.

I use XP at home, because I get a free license from Uni to use while I'm a student. When I'm out of here, it's gone. All my favourite games tend to be runnable in linux these days anyway.

I'm not going to rush out and buy a new computer to run Vista. The computer I have could probably run it, but why bother, when I can run XP with a lower system footprint. And I'm not just talking about memory here (because you know, even though vista has a fresh boot usage of about 700mb, that's it's preloaded binaries and all that, I can accept that, but you can't deny XP uses less resources than vista, and will run faster than vista, on hardware a couple of years old).

Oh, and by the way, calling it a "user issue" is a cop out in the IT world. If users can't figure out how to use your software, you've built bad software, period!

how is it a cop out?

if you don't know who to do something you either visit www.google.com.au or read the information you were given with it. It's really not that hard. The only issue I had with vista was when i had my laptop in the office and tried to hook it up to the network. Found the issue in 2 minutes because I googled.

It's really not that bad if you know what you are doing.

It's poor quality for a software developer like Microsoft, with a business model like theirs, and a high price for their software, to require their users to "google" or even "live search" to figure out how to get their software running.

Perhaps I skimped over the article too fast, but how does this nag people who actually bought their windows legally?

I have no issues with MS wanting to stamp out piracy. Generally those that whinge the most are the ones who pirate it in the first place.

And Lord-Ezekiel XP-PRO is well and truely still available with no plans to cease supply for the time being just yet.

2shy, you clearly have no idea how bad microsoft is at telling legal copy from non-legal copy.

i had to crack my legal copy of XP, which i bought brand new and packaged from some retailer i cant remember anymore, just to stop it from making those damn "your copy might be illegal" popups.

Yes actually your right there, everyone can afford to buy a new PC to run Vista.. because the price of technology is so dirt cheap atm, if you have a case+psu, keyboard, mouse, and monitor, you can build a system that runs Vista, and well I might add for a little over $400... or even less.

Fuck Vista, fuck Microsoft. Yeah, ok, it's doing an ok job now, hoo-fucking-ray, from my experience with it, I still think it's shit and hope to never use it.

Well as you as you think buddy! :P Vista must be shit!

lol

I think that if you don't know what your talking about... you shouldn't talk at all. Vista is a great operating system and I would never think of going back to XP, sure some people have their reservations about it, I did.. but they're all gone now, because I love Vista. Why you ask? Because simply put, it is the superior OS

Well of course it does, XP was first built and designed in the P3 era, and just runs fine on anything above that. But now these days you can afford to have a beefy system, with 2gb ram and a dual core processor, and NO not cost an arm and a leg. Vista runs better with newer hardware then XP could! and BTW I have a had a fresh install of Vista running not too shabby on an Athlon XP machine (but who would run these anymore?)

Oh, and by the way, calling it a "user issue" is a cop out in the IT world. If users can't figure out how to use your software, you've built bad software, period!

Sometimes it is a user issue, and with people as blinded as you, it's not hard to see why. Any problems with Vista can either be resolved with a little research, or by an update which are never too long away. Yes Vista has a few issues, so did XP, XP was bullocks until SP1 and even then not completely enjoyable until SP2. So I wouldn't knock Vista until you have actually used it... and had plenty of experience with it.

EDIT: BTW I got in first last night and posted this topic... hoorah for the code project newsletter that keeps me up to date on the technology world: http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=2&c=21&t=2439

I think that one's pretty obvious - because the cost is more than $0.00. amiright? Maybe you should write to Wrigley and tell them to lower the price of their gum, I hear tha tkids steal it a lot, too.

Oooh, you big bad cracker you. May we all have your babies? Pretty please? Hopefully we can train them to call MS and sort out trivial problems like that, and teach them that posturing is full of lol and not much else.

The first thing I do with all my XP machines is to set the background to black.

I don't like wallpapers and I don't like the native blue.

I guess I will never know if Microsoft thinks I am running something dodgy.

I dont pirate, I just hate DRM (ever since sony rootkit CD's) and 'phone home' software (caus im paranoid like that).

thats why im against it.

I still use Windows 2000 on as many machines as possible (except my main 3) because it doesnt need to be 'activated' when I decide it needs a format.

SceptreCore: what basis do you have to accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about? Because my opinion differs from yours?

For what I need to use my computer for, and for my experiences with both XP and Vista, I will choose XP in an instant. I am informed, and have experience, with both environments.

Don't make accusations you've got no grounding in.
