So my Dell Laptop is starting to slow down a bit, I was just wondering what program or steps you guys take to keep your laptop running as fast as it can and keep all the useless background programs out of the way?

Thanks

And auslogics defrag, as well you can use msconfig to stop unwanted programs starting up with windows. They can also be configured under "Tools" in ccleaner.

Ccleaner.

Use it to remove old programs, clean the registry and control startup applications.

O&O Defrag is another good defrag utility. The standard windows one is a little bit shit.

+ 1 to all the applications mentioned, I have used all of them and they work well.

Also, doesn't hurt to run a few anti-spyware programs over your computer to make sure you don't have any nasties that are slowing things down (or worse). Get the latest versions of Spybot, Adaware and SuperAntiSpyware and do a complete scan.

HiJackThis

You can literally remove everything it finds, although if you've got anti-virus you probably want to leave that on. And with the Services you don't want to disable them with HiJackThis, you just note their names, open up services.msc and set them to Disabled (if you don't want them running).

You don't need anything in their running though. But you might want some of them.

If you want to run a HiJackThis scan and PM it to me I can advise with actual detail. I think in general they frown upon posting them in the forums for some reason to do with getting flooded with them.

Actually I do as I have had issues in the with 3rd party defrag tools.
Also despite their claims I also wonder how good these 3rd party defrag tools are seeing as they generally claim to be so much faster than the windows one. After all the included defrag is actually Diskeeper rebadged, and diskeeper lite is often touted as being so much better than the windows one.

A lot of the third party tools like defraggler utilise the Windows one and are just optimisations of it.

I find Auslogics defrag works a treat and is way faster than the windows one. Also I have used it on machines that hardly ever see a defrag and the increase in performance is very noticeable.

Err tanty', HiJackThis will list anything thats been changed.

eg. if a virus has tagged onto

winlogonlogon=userinit.exe, virus.exe

it will list that.

Id recommend not playing with Hijackthis unless you know whats up. Post a log from it and drop me a PM so iknow if you want us to go through it though.

as for tools.

Piriform CCLEANER
Piriform DEFRAGGLER
(front end for windows defrag, a defrag is a defrag is a defrag. Sure some are 'better' but a user wont notice the diff.)

make sure in the performace tab of my computer properties, everthing is turned off. lol.

thats really all you can do. 'speed up software' doesnt work. Anything that works (think SysInternals software) is bought out by MS for licenced use. lol.

They dont want competition.
