Hey guys,

i just re-installed windows vista ultimate edition and when i go to activate it, it says "key already in use" i try the phone activation and it says the same thing, i have installed / activated that key a few time due to format / bios update / new hardware.

is there only a certain number of time you can do this?
what should i do? call MS and talk to a person not a machine?

thanks,

When you call Microsoft, when it says that this copy of Vista has been activated too many times, wait for it to put you through to a customer service rep. Then tell them that this is a reinstallation.

They will then activate the software for you.

What kind of new hardware... Motherboard?

If you tell them it's a motherboard replacement, they will say "Sorry, but your going to have to re-purchase your license sir" and we all know what a slap in the face that is especially for the price we paid for it!

So the good old "I got a nasty virus and had to do a re-install" is the best thing to say if you have upgraded the motherboard... not to sure about how picky they are with BIOS updates though.

Yeah, too bad if your motherboard decides to play silly buggers and fails to boot, huh?

Good work, Microsoft.

Reactivation should be based on number of changes (and obviously with reinstallations) if they must occur. Completely barring motherboard replacements is foolish - motherboards sometimes fail (as in my case) and sometimes identical boards aren't available.

Now, Wine IS getting pretty good, and my main box (which is still down, sadly) dual boots, but obviously it isn't perfect (I have certain software that simply refuses to work outside of Windows).
