Vista - Not the Gaming operating system that MS promised

It's been a long time since I've actually, properly, used XP. I've used it for benching, mainly, and it's what I used prior to Windows Vista. When Vista came out, I got it in the hope that I would be the cool kid on the block. I soon uninstalled it because of the amount of pain my PC was put through, having an Athlon and 512m of ram.

Later though, once I had upgraded to a Core2 rig, I decided to give it a 2nd chance, and was quite pleased with it.

But now, recently I am not happy that I have it on my system, basically because it doesn't allow AA in so many games.

Firstly I tried Grid, and it simply would be a pain at 0.5 FPS when AA was enabled. Need for speed carbon would not allow the AA setting AT ALL. And now, I just recently installed Call of Juarez, and the AA option is grayed out there, too.

Not to mention the lack of EAX support, etc.

I think I'm over Vista, and even though I have a quad core, I think I'm going back to XP soon.

Stop complaining you sook, chin up and power on through. I've never had any problems with AA under vista with grid and NFS.
Also i've had Company of heroes in both dx9 and 10 with the filtering maxed out and it runs well

Only raw deal I've gotten with Vista so far was that DiRT was farked, would load just fine but not actually bother starting races. Otherwise, all is rosy.

stick with xp, it runs flawlessly on a good rig and you don't run into any problems.

I thought about this, and the only real DX10 game atm is Crysis, and it runs like shit and is a shit game. And yeah I have a quad core, which I know is better on Vista, however, by the time DX10 becomes the standard, Windows 7 would be close and/or Vista would be perfected.

So meh. I've given this OS a good 2 year run, and decided it's time to take a step back 8 years.

I still have your PMs about how Vista is better etc, though :D

You'd better hope it's the latter because I can't see Windows 7 being the saviour of all things Microsoft like most Vista detractors think it'll be.

It's strange though because I love Vista for it's functionality and ease of access. However, I still like to play the odd game on the odd occasion, and because it's not often, I'm quite particular about how I want it to run. I don't buy a 2,000 thousand dollar computer so I can't use what I want.

yeh, I had issues with GRID, V8Supercars3, and DiRT using Vista, it wouldn't even recognise my 28" screen when I got it - WTF! I'm over the PoS. it's the worst OS M$ has produced since winME.
I'm happily using XP Professional x64 now, and all my games (and everything else) work great, there's no glitches, and everything is noticeably faster than Vista.
I wanted Vista to work, it looks pretty, and has DX10, but no such luck.
you expect a new OS to be better, to have improvements, that's the whole point of change, to move on to something better, not just change for changes' sake.

It's actually easy to make it look as good, actually better, with animated GUIs etc. Windows Blinds FTW ;-)

I tried the GRID demo, it ran VERY slow, like a slideshow on my machine. I have all latest hardware drivers.Other games like Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004, and Quake 3 run as smooth as silk.

The main things I don't like about vista gaming are that I seem to always get interrupted by low memory warnings no matter how much I set my page file to.

And I occasionally get crashes here and there even though my system is kept in tip top shape.

Haven't actually had any problems getting games to run, but I have that feeling that if I were running XP at least I wouldn't have to worry about the game crashing or minimising by itself.

This sounds like memory leaks you should probably look into that

Quake 3 and UT04... Erm, those aren't exactly the most intensive games on the planet - so maybe Grid just was too much?

Firstly I tried Grid, and it simply would be a pain at 0.5 FPS when AA was enabled.

Then you have a computer problem.Nothing to do with vista.Take it to someone that has a bit of Tech knowledge to sort it out for you.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.
