4GB ... that's it. You need to fork out for Vista x64 for 8GB.

Yup. Less than 4GB actually. More like 3.8xGB. You'll need a 64bit kernel to see anything over this.

No.
In fact you are not even making full use of the 4Gb you have.

Version Limit in 32-bit Windows Limit in 64-bit Windows
Windows Vista Ultimate 4 GB 128 GB
Windows Vista Enterprise 4 GB 128 GB
Windows Vista Business 4 GB 128 GB
Windows Vista Home Premium 4 GB 16 GB
Windows Vista Home Basic 4 GB 8 GB
Windows Vista Starter 4 GB Not applicable

From
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/aa366778.aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_vista

Note that those max memory limits including physical ram, video ram bios memory hard drive cache and any other hardware you have that has inbuilt physical memory.
So assuming you have a 512Mb video card your OS is only making use of about 3.4Gb of ram, no matter what device manager says. It is a hard 32 bit address space limit.

Pity no consumer mobos support that amount. 4Gb, 8Gb and 16Gb seems about the limit ATM.

Nope you have to get a 64bit edition of Vista and install it instead of the 32 bit you have now, you cant just put in a key and change over the key components of an operating system

If they told you 32-bit Vista could address more than 4GB, they are truly idiots. Most stores stock the 32-bit version as it's one that they tend to sell more as most folks don't get 4GB or more of RAM.

Same thing happened with me at JB Hifi, the dudes like "Yes you can put upto 4GB of RAM in this one, if you want more then you have to get Vista Ultimate".

I called him aside after the consumer had left and told him that any 64bit OS can support more than 4GB, and he said that he thought only Ultimate came in 64bit. I slapped him and moved on.

I agree it is hard to stand in a store and bite your tongue when listening to the misinformation (read crap) put out there by some (read most) "salesman".

Sometimes I can keep my mouth shut but sometimes the claims are so outrageous that I cannot help myself :D

lol, i work at the local dick smiths, and some of the crap the other "salesmen" come up with is great. heres one i here regularly: "norton is really goo, i think its better than avg" and apparently windows live onecare is also really good *palmface* i once told a customer not to buy norton and get trend micro instead, and the manager told me that i should sell them what they want, not the better product. silly boss.

You don't get a new CD key and/or additional licence. You get a new disk, like the soviet and allies disks from Red Alert. Same game, different part of the content.

This has been discussed far too many times now.
