My Record Uptime (on a winXP box?!?)

Hi all,

My XP box just hit 150 days uptime earlier today, this is pretty good I think as the box has no redundancy, no UPS and runs purely off house power.

The box is admin'd daily by myself and is always undergoing tasks, it used to fold for about the first 120 days too!

Anyway, just out of interest is this actually a good period, or have others regularly seen uptimes of the similar on similar systems???

Not bad. You haven't been installing anything on it over that time have you? Bastard thing usually whines about needing to reboot if you install more than a browser or notepad add-on otherwise. Not a bad effort.

360 days for a Server 2003 box with Exchange, file and print. 24 hour production box. Amazing the amount of perimeter security you have to put around a box that can't be updated often.

the best uptime on my box is 92 days. usually used for playing games, msn, net surfing and some 3d work which it splits with another machine in the same house. XP is usually pretty hardy if you dont go to untrusted websites where the popups do all sorts of weird shit, or install umpteen types of software that youll only use once.

rule of thumb, dont install software youll only use once and is from an untrusted source.

I take all my enterprise hosts down on a 90 days patching cycle. If they have more uptime than this, I consider them a liability to the department and the business. Uptime != cool, ultimately.

most of our systems have a 60 to 90 day cycle, thats an old hanger on of a testing box, still its never given me grief at all
