His Billness declares, "Less memory and more efficiency" from Windows 7

While at the Windows Digital Lifestyle Consortium in Japan, Bill Gates gave a hint about how Windows 7 will perform.

"We're hard at work, I would say, on the next version, which we call Windows 7. I'm very excited about the work being done there. The ability to be lower power, take less memory, be more efficient, and have lots more connections up to the mobile phone, so those scenarios connect up well to make it a great platform for the best gaming that can be done, to connect up to the thing being done out on the Internet, so that, for example, if you have two personal computers, that your files automatically are synchronized between them, and so you don't have a lot of work to move that data back and forth. "

Hopefully he's not kidding us... and that Windows 7 will be widely excepted upon release, unlike Vista!

We will see I guess.

Till then I think I may move to Ubuntu.

For you, I think Ubuntu would be good, because of your background in computers and you being a system admin, but for someone like me who is used to the workings of a nice GUI, I can't stand it.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.2 for most of my day-to-day stuff now. I've found OS X way more hassle-free than any Linux I've ever used... and VMware fusion is orgasmic.

I'll try Windows 7... but I think my affair with Redmond is rapidly waning.

I'll move to Windows 7. Purely because I'm a sucker to have the latest Windows version.

Many of the so called "screenshots" of Windows 7 look just like Vista... So Im hoping before release that they can make the GUI look a little sweeter, and different.

And if Bill isn't pulling our legs, and Win7 will be completely un-system hogging, then maybe some of us Atomicans can build cheaper systems again!

does anyone have any knowledge on 'minwin', I haven't found any enlightening info in my googling. :)

From following the ars technica links from the article, it sounds like minwin was a concept, and probably won't go into production as such.

Tho', if it builds on from the lastest vista and server builds, it may be possible to run it without a traditional gui.

If it is slated to appear next year, or the year after, then that'd make Vista the NT version of ME - which may mean we see a fairly similar UI for win.7, cf something hugely different. Of course, the shell/gui may be something that's still to be built/designed in the next year or two.

In terms of 'not hogging the system', system specs in 1-3 years time may change our perception of what 'hogging the system' means.

True, next years Nehalem, and Deneb platforms will be DDR3 support (but AM3 will have DDR2 support to go on AM2+ mobo's) so yes there will be an increase of power and what we call a level! I snagged a segment of the full press release at the microsoft website:

"Were able to make that kind of bet, make an investment. We have our research that is there to work closely with your research groups on those kinds of fundamental advances that will allow us to bring in things like natural user interface, that will allow us to take advantage of these multi-core architectures , will allow us to do security in a new and different way."

So it looks like they are designing Win7 with support for Quadcores, and maybe even higher!
It has been hinted that Windows 7 will be ready for release before 2010... as they have already been distributing copies to partners for testing, so fingers crossed!

At a guess, I'd say that they'd be aiming the OS to make the most of at least 2-4GB of RAM, and at least 2 cores.

From what I've read, it sounds like Surface (or whatever it's called) should be ready to be made apart of OS7 by the time it ships.

I'm really not sure how accurate the currently rumoured design timetables are - certainly it should be a lot less complex, with a lot of the hard work being done in OS6, so 1-2 years does sound reasonable, at least.

So far, the only compelling reason for me to upgrade to OS6 is for the updated GUI (from my understanding it doesn't have the same GDI limitations as previous versions of Windows) - hopefully OS7 brings more to the table.

Whoah whoah whoah. Ubuntu has one of the nicest GUI's I've come across [short of switching to a Mac].

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the next version of Windows looked similar to the screenshots of Windows Mobile 7. Would be sexy actually.

Art to one person can look like faeces to another.

I certainly hope that W7 is to Vista as XP was to ME. Well, throw in a bit more stability at release, keep the classic GUI alive, and then I'd be quite happy.

The difference is Mac's "nice" GUI is non-functional and inefficient.

Vista has always been excellent in regards to stability, I can't see any link between it and the abortion that is Windows ME.

I heard that Windows 7 will be a different UI all together, time will tell.
