Mac 27

Hi,
I have the Thermaltake 850w thoughpower.
My mate said that this powersupply does not support the nvidia 2 series (GTX280) or the nvidia 4870x2.

Is this true?

Cheers
Mac.

I don't see why it wouldn't, unless he was looking at some list of 'SLI Approved' power suplies or something, and it wasn't on there.

If it's got the right plugs on it, you're fine. And I think you can get molex to those 6 or 8 pin plug adaptors anyway...

As long as it can deliver above and beyond the call of duty (equal to or more than it's maximum wattage) Then it should be more than capable of running a GT200 SLI config, or a 4870X2.

I'm not sure about this PSU, but if needed you can buy molex to PCIe adaptors if required. i don't see any reason why it wouldn't support a 280GTX or a 4870x2. i'm runnig a 9800GX2 on a CM 620 modular PSU without breaking a sweat. 9800GX2 is a power hungy card and i'd suppose it'd consume power equal to a 280GTX.

A Power Supply doesn't have official support for a certain peice of hardware, it has to have the support for the power requirements of that piece of hardware. The 850w Toughy can handle 2 of either of those cards.

Does he mean the lack of 8-pin pci-e connectors? because that could be the only potential issue i could think of... other than that pretty much what tantryl said.

My friend didn't mean that it doesn't have enough power, he meant that it doesn't have enough 8 pin plugs or something.

Well each of those cards have 1 6 pin and 1 8 pin connector, does your PSU have one of those?

I think you will be pushing it tho, I cant say it cant, but the 12v rail is weak. but that doesnt mean it cant, if it has all the plugs for 2x high end vid, chances are it will work. thats 2x9pins and 2x6pins.

He didn't ask about running them in SLI/Crossfire.

It's a single GTX2x0 (140W or 180W) or a single 4870X2 (265W).

The GTX2x0 would run easily, without breaking a sweat on even the most loaded up system.

The 4870X2 might struggle if you were on a Skulltrail platform with two overclocked Q6600's or something.
