I would assume your best bet would be to read up on a few that are in your price range and find some reviews of them.

lol well i am not much help i am more a fan of the refidex :P but why don't you just go down to like JB hifi and test a few out find the ones that have a simple easy to read graphic display and non annoying voice.

Tom tom should be OK
Garmin models are good too, I'm using an Asus r700 at the moment and seems to be pretty good except for battery life. Stays permanently in the car now so it's not an issue any more. My nephew works in good guys and has been seeing a few of the new navman series being returned stuck looping at start up. Have a hands on with the units as some of the software can be unintuitive. Tried using a unit with Copilot Live on it and it wasn't all that user friendly.
