Having given up on the 790i, where to next>?

well the guy pulled out of the GTX280 deal as the store gave him a refund, but for my troubles he passed on to me an extra $20 which was decent of him.

Today I talked to the guys at work and have made a decision (mostly because I didn't realise this particular board would be available in Australia). As of Monday, the Foxconn Blackops board will be available in Australia and as of Monday I will be picking one up. To supplement it I am going to ask intel if I can get an ES E8600 off them to test :P and see how that goes. If I can't I'll just get one for myself anyway. I'll keep my DDR3 (I like it anyway) and buy a 4870X2 when they come out in 2 weeks, possibly move to quadfire if the price drops on them in a couple months time.

Excited now :)

Sounds like the way to go... you talk of going simple, and economizing, but you will always lust for the uber system... which is what you will have!

how does one go around getting an engineering sample cpu? do you have to own/work in a shop or something?

Dude I actually don't understand your logic, you said you wanted reliability and stability, but you're going for a board on the day it hits the market?

Not to mention an Engineering sample CPU...

Oh, and a multi GPU graphics card? :P

If you can save up enough money you could always get a qx9650 off ebay or something, that way you have your benching toy and 24/7 chip rolled into one, throw in the black ops mobo and you have a pretty dam good combo.

@fats
the blackops mobo has been reviewed on the net, and also previewed by atomic - the other nice thing is that I will have purchased it in Australia and warranty (if there are problems) will not be nearly as much of a headache.

There is nothing wrong with ES cpus - why should they be any less stable than a normal cpu?

ATI have proven themselves in my eyes recently and I trust the 4870x2 will be a decent card. If not, it can always be sold :P

@nesquick
Yeah I work for enspire digital, I do most of their high end stuff and watercooled pc's. They actually taught me the majority of what I know, which is cool. David (my boss) knows an intel guy pretty well and he and I like to test new stuff out, hence the seeing if we can get an ES to test out. If I like, I'll make the move.
I have watched QX9650 prices for a long time now, and they have always remained just a bit out of my league (particularly now, post NZ holiday).

Expect to see pics on Monday/Tuesday :)

ES sample cpu's in theory should be cherry picked as why would intel send out shit engineering samples? also is it true they have an unlocked multi? i read that on this other forum when i googled engineering sample cpu's.

some have unlocked multis and some don't. The two I have used have been the Q9300 and the E8500, neither of which (sadly) had unlocked multis.

Though with the E8600 having 10x multi, you almost don't need it :)

Good stuff marxy, sounds like you're sorted. I just feel like that you could do with a system built from work at a discount! And that'll sort everything out no problems :D

ok a little update -
no news yet on the ES CPU (sceptre you just need to know people, like the Australian intel rep :P), but for now we will see how it goes - I still have a decent CPU in the Q6700.

After doing more reading I changed my order to DFI UT-X48-T3RS, it seems to be much more stable.

Finally this morning I purchased (second-hand but unused) 2gb Patriot 1866mhz DDR3, to supplement my cellshocks, for an unbelievably small $120!! Never in my plans did I expect to move to 4GB ddr3 but it was so cheap I couldn't resist, and who can blame me??

Will be putting it all together this week as it arrives, and putting it through some test runs. Now all we have to do is wait for the 4870x2 to be released.

When the mobo arrives I will start an upgrade thread aka marxland v2.0 in which I will have pics etc.

thanks for the advice and help guys

marxland v2.0.... Im just gonna RSVP right now okay! :P

Why don't you just buy a single 4870, and then get another later, surely two is enough?

If there is anything I might have seen, might or might not have but. I think there is a X58 Chipset coming out soon.

*Edit.

In fact the X58 is true and is the first nehalem motherboard.

mmm would make a nice mantle piece for me to look and wish i had a cpu that worked in it :P

Marx have you considered getting an E0 stepping e8500 because thats what i am considering as this quad at 3.6 is not fast enough for my crossfire setup not to mention i want MOAR speed like you :D

I'm not sure if there are any E0 E8500s (yet?).
If there are then I'd probably go for one of them over an E8600 as I don't think the price difference is worth it (but only if it's E0). If I hear or see of one I'll let you know, and vice versa.

Got a bid on the motherboard today - $360 on evilbay. It's still got more than a day to go so let's hope it escalates a little. In the very least it has already paid for my new motherboard :)

PS. Nesquick I expect your Q6700 to be worth at least $210-$250 so tell the guy offering $150 to fuck off.
