I have a non-backlight LCD from DSE
What i want to know is, can i solder a LED for the backlight on? i remember reading that the PCBs are identical except for the LED disclusion. i may be wrong though.

You can solder leds to the points [a] and [k]. Unfortunately the screen isn't mounted as high as the backlit model and you can't even fit an smd led under there, leaving mounting to the outside and that will localise the light and won't illuminate very well...Sorry:(

yeah i had the backlit one but sold it, you can get a whole stack of leds and put them around the outside of the thing,(look at nokia phones backlights and youll know what im talking about)that will give you some light.

yeah a high intensity with as wider viewing angle as you can get might work.

The PCB's ARE NOT the same, but you can just manually connect up the LED wiring and it's fine

I just used 5mm LEDS, ground down on a belt sander till they were flat enough to fit - sand in the same plane as the metal bits in the LED. Using 2 the effect is OK, but not as good as a real backlight. The first time, try with a cheap LED to ensure you don't stuff it with 5 buck leds

The actuall glass LCD is also different, there is a reflective strip on the back of non backlit LCD's that will not let light from leds pass through it event if you get them under there. And trust me, removing the strip does not work! if you used laserdiodes then you will get a dull backlight.

I tried it with 20Cd Red led's and the light penetrates a bit, but it doesn't even come close to real backlight LCD's and its limited to two spots. Pitty i don't have a digital camera, else i'd show you. If you try pulling the LCD to bits you'll probably never get it to go again, the rubber conductor things are a prick to line up again - I did that the first time i tried this - removing the strip allows light to pass readily through - although it looks better being diffused a bit by the reflective layer, and you'll probably kill the module.
Maybe see if Oatley Electronics has some cheap LED backlights

I made the LCD thingo, tested it with LCDprint (works fine), but can't get it to work with LCDcenter 2.0.

How to set it up as LPT (parallel port) instead of COM1 (serial port).
