best way to light my case

just wondering which is the best way to light up the inside of my case. i had a cold cathode in a while back, but finding a truely RED cold cathode in australia is quite hard, as any store that sticks them dont have any in, and cant get more in.

so, should i persist with finding a desent true red cathode (not a shitty pink one), or find another way, ie LED's

for those not familiar with my case, i have a p180 with the hitman logo cut into the side, so illumination has to be red (or maroon, i spose).

i am handy with a soldering iron, so i can prolly do it with a bunch of LED's hooked up via molex, i just dont know how to make a circuit to take the power from the PSU to the voltage that the LED's need.

any help with either problem appreciated.

I can't vouch for them, but these are premade ones:

Other than that, check out issue 93 for a small part of a tutorial that kinda explains how to choose LEDs and wire them in a computer.

cellophane ;)

(I dont mean light your case with it - I mean apply it to your lights until they are red enough)

From the Lian Li Rebui;d, Pt 02:
"Now, we have chronicled this before, but it is such a great concept it is worth re-iterating. Using the plastic tube and mounting blocks from a dead cathode, shortened to the required 125mm length, we made a run of 5 blue LED’s (each with its own resistor – so if one blows the others don’t). The LED’s were high intensity, 5000MCD water-clear items from Jaycar (Cat # ZD0182), with the lenses sanded opaque with 1200 Wet’n’Dry to increase the light spread. After running the wires out, the end-block was glued back on with Weldon acrylic cement. These LED’s are only $2.75 each, so it is a relatively cheap exercise for a custom length unit with a rich colour output."

Had an idea last night - Humor me for a minute:

Know those cheap small little DJ laser chasers? Not a big one, just a small little guy like this: http://www.poweruser.be/shop/images/23551.jpg
Can be found around 10cm long for around 50-80 bucks

What Im thinking is - Gut it, throw away the shell, and install the guts into your system

The laser will go all over the place, and because its in a small area you will not see the patterns happening - You will just see the light zipping around inside of the case

You avatar - You have that cut into your case dont you? Was first thinking about the chaser zipping around the back of that cut out from inside the case

Dunno - Think ill play with the idea myself - Should light the case up nicely, but the flashing may be annoying after a while, so switch be a good idea

that could be cool. if you do it, let me know how you go.

im thinking of either doing the ALED thing, or getting a flexiglow bubble light, which could also be cool as long as its a proper red.

what brand are you using? make sure it will make any extensive heat inside your case.

LED's dont really put out any heat, and cold cathodes only put out a very small amount, and certainly not enough to worry me.

OK, i have some 3mm LED's that i bought from work. the idea is to chain a whoel bunch of them up in parrallel inside the old cathodes tube. only question is: what type of resistor do i use to take the power from the PSU (5v or 12v) down to the voltage of the LED's (apparently 2v).

i did do electronics in year 9 & 10, bu that was too long ago (read: more than five minutes ago)for me to remember anything of any use.

so, can someone help me with a diagram of what i need to do/get.

thanks in advance
