New Build, 3Dfx project for old school gaming goodness.

Hi,

Ive slowly started gathering the parts for this new project iam going to be undertaking. Its going to be a visual dedication to the initial advances made by 3Dfx in regards to bringing 3D gaming to the home user. I would love some input from you guys about what you guys recon should be included. This setup will be used to run all my old school 2d/3d adventure games like Baldurs gate/Fallout/ and ofcourse the gold box SSI games.

Initially case design only.

Parts:

1. 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500
2. Dual P3 1.2ghz
3. 1 Gig Ram
4. 200 Gig Ide Harddrive
5. Dvd Burner
6. Floppy drive?
7. 400W PSU

I dont have a case yet for this project, so am open to all ideas. But i do want the V5 5500 to be visable.

I also want the system to run without sounding like a wind tunnel, and also would like to keep a 3Dfx theme throughout.

Couple of notes:
I havent decided upon a OS yet either, (sides Dual booting BeOS), as iam not sure if 98se supports dual cpu's. (iam pretty sure it dont), so in that case, iam either stuck with Win2000 or XP.

what would run nicer on that system, XP or 2k? (obviously with games in mind)

cheers and any info, or ideas would be much appreciated :)

Dual processors are a waste. But if that's the only mobo you're going to have your hands on, then sure, it won't hurt.

OS choice will come down to what games you want to play.

Windows 98 would probably be a good balance between compatibility and current-ness. It supports up to DirectX 9c, at the same time being "officially" Glide 1 and 2 compatible.

Why BeOS? I'm not bagging the OS btw, but if this box is purely for early 3D gaming, then why bother?

Whatever you choose, you'll probably find that your old SSI games won't run without some kind of CPU-slowing utility. Dosbox is the most complete solution for this.

SS, Only reason for running BeOS, is that the V 5500 is nativly supported by R5 and /has/ working hw accel GL for Quake2 :)

Also recon it does web scurfing nicer and quicker than IE/firefox/opera. It also handles multimedia extremely efficient. Plus, i used to use it a few years back and iam home sick :) Might even get back into doing a spot of dev'ing here and there.

So, in regards for OS's, ill probely go 98se, XP and BeOS, and dare i say it, maybe even a pure Dos boot :)

Thanks for the hint that 98 is officially glide compatible. any other games that the little v 5500 can run?

I have heard that the v 5500 is extremely CPU dependant?...

If you're going to go down the pure DOS route, make sure you get a sound card that's supported properly.

A good choice is a Sound Blaster 16 or Sound Blaster Pro. Just about all DOS games will work flawlessly with genuine Sound Blasters, right back to 80s stuff with AdLib music.

Not so much joy with SB clones, like ESS and Mad16. Although if you can get your hands on a GUS... mmmm....

Didn't the Voodoo 5 have an external power brick?

Someone from here sent me a SB live 5.1 the other week, for this little project, so hopefully that will cover me nicely.

V5 has an extra power connector on the board, the V5 6K had the external power brick connection.

Windows 95/98/ME are allergic to multiple cores/CPUs ... you'll need to disable one core if you run those OSes.
