So ive been doing EVERYTHING to my Xbox.

*hides condoms* *cough* ANYWHO!

DONE:
Soft-mod
oil-fan
add second fan
lap heatsinks
reseat with AS5
replace ATA33 cable with ATA133 cable.
Dremel out fan-guards
Replace with 50gb HDD (wanna find a 120gb HDD, close to its max)

Possibly left to do:
Replace with custom BIOS (need long file name support)

Wire controller ports into USB ports also (they really already are anyway, and it can now use USB storage :D)

add 64mb ram (you have to solder every pin, but im still thinking it might be fun)

Paint

---------------------------
So overall:

Xbox can now be a media PC (and is)

Fans are silent (well was silent, adding another kept it at same noise. acceptable to me)

Lapping heatsinks = 20deg drop on CPU, 18deg drop on GPU (now runs at 50max, 40 nominal)

ATA cable replace stopped dropped frames in 720p videos

Xbox is set to NTSC and thusly can use HiDef output

can power-off the console by remote.

Now if you'll excuse me, im off to go custom bios hunting. ill post pics when everything is done, although unless i paint you wont know.

If anyone wants help doing these mods, they only tok me a day, and could easily be a 'first mod' for someone who has a useless Xbox and wants to play around.

Went through all this a few years ago... The xbox is a damn useful bit of hardware, especially at the rock-bottom prices it can be had for these days. AND it plays games! :P

I didn't do any hard mods apart from upgrading the HDD, didn't see the need... Since I got my X360 and HTPC setup, it's been hooked up to a crappy $80 34cm TV, and watches everything over the network with XBMC's excellent SMB support.

If you want more hdd space you should check out the 411GB project over at www.xboxscene.com has plenty of ideas and tutorials, and shows you a few ways to solder on new ram

BFG, sorry man, keeping it in the original 'small' (yes i use that term slightly sarcastically) case is part of the fun.

and LordBug, you're fucking insane :P

its not a socket or anything, its built into the motherboard.

there is a bit of discussion as to whether or not people have actually done it. Websites say so, but its still in question by the community it seems.

there was a shop scamming people for a while...

What I want is a BIOS that lets me overclock the chip to 800mhz. but they dont exist :(

It'd be fun though ;P
Kinda sounds as though it isn't unpossible:

I just did a quick bit of searching, and apparently you can use any size of HDD in the old XBox, so long as you format it with the UnleashX dash (You'll have to create a G: dir though, not that that's a bad thing).
This find tempts me greatly. The 120 in my XBox just ain't enough.
A 500GB might be a good standin until the larger sizes come down in price. Oooooh so tempting!

I'd be keen to see some photos/tuts by you though. I love my XBMC, and reduced noise/increased performance would not be a bad thing at all. Plus, this mention of long filename support intrigues me.
