Build, MOD, Painting Inside My CM 690 Case...

So today I hooked up and I'm using my new Mouse also, I got it with my new G11 keyboard but never started using it, not sure why not. but now I am.

I have the Logitech MX-518 mouse and so far i really like it. the on the fly keys work in windows also, not just games, but it goes from a lil to slow, then to fast for me.. so I'm gettin used to the speed.

question, does anyone kno of a good Headset I could get. I've been considering a wireless set, but I hear bad things.. what sound I get?

and my other question was about my Sound card, or lack there of. I kno that this Mobo the eVGA 750i has a pretty decent 7.1 sound card built in.. but my question is how good are the onboard ones. I'm not using 7.1 I'm using 2.1 with my New Bose speakers. they sound amazing, but I did hear people sayin they are better with a good sound card. those people might have had older Mobo's with crappy onboard. I'm not sure, mine sounds great, but would I benifit from getting a sound card???

gunther, just out of interest, what rough price did your whole system come to?

reb, gunther is in the US of A :P

And as for the sound card, the onboard on the FTW is completely shite. I hate it. I can hear buzzing noises when watching movies, and listening to music, it sounds flat and horrible. Like a nightmare, except it never ends.

I did have the Auzentech X-fi Prelude, which is the best soundcard you can get, but I had to get rid of it for SLI.

I'm looking at the ASUS Xonar D2M, which is a PCIe1X sound card that supposedly rivals the Auzentech, and since you're on Vista this is the one that I'd recommend if you want to go SLI later. If not, get the Auzentech and drown in the awesome audio quality.

If you think that the speakers sound 'amazing' now, then you really have no need for a soundcard. They are more for the purists, except for the fact that most good cards support EAX5 which makes sounds in games:

so getting a sound card would be a GOOD Idea then..

I can't hear anything on the onboard on my 750i Frunj.. maybe yours is defective.. lol. I don't kno. mine sounds good, I haven't watched a movie yet.. maybe I should and see what i think. I have a soundcard.. it's not the best.. but I have one from my last system. let me look it up and post what it is tomorro. I'd do it tonight but It's comin up on 2AM.. and ONCE again I work at 9.. so I must go to sleep. but I'll let ya kno what card I have tomorro. It's probably to old to be worth while. it's like a Soundblaster Live! or something.. haha I can't member.

and Mac... does it really make games that amazingly better.?

Yup! Mainly if you have a good pair of headphones, the positional audio is great for fps especially.

I was looking at a few old parts from my First Computer.. so not the one I was using right before this build, but my first PC.. some freind built it from scratch with all his random parts.. (Back when I thought computers were complicated).

video card.. was cool back in 2003, but not now. lol

I don't use that forum, I just found the picture there..
I guess that card was good when it came out huh.. It worked from Counterstrike.. not great, but it worked.

And I was right.. I have a ghetto Soundblaster Live!

http://www.biocomp.net/sound_blaster.jpg

is that completely to old, and I would be better off using the onboard right??

I don't think that they even have Vista drivers for it :s

And it wouldn't be better than onboard anyway. Maybe a little bit, but nothing worth changing to. You'd also have to find some hacked drivers that will work, so that's a whole 'nother hurdle to get over.

lol, Ya I'll pass on that.. but I did look up the Auzentech Prelude.. and sorry, but I'm not about to spend $200 bucks on a sound card.. maybe if my system didn't sound good, but it does. I might get something to bettter it, but I for sure don't need something top of the line like that.. and I'm sure its a good card, but can you really, REALLY here that big of a difference from a $75 dollar card, and say the Auzentech?? Doubt it, although maybe games sound a lil better. I saw a Creative Audigy or something card today with the EAX5 macdaddy was talkin about. it also was 96khz or whatever.. same rating as some expensive ones.. yet it was pretty cheap. maybe I should just try something Mediumly priced.. ?? what ya think..

HMM.. ok so here's the latest from Cory's sytem.. everything is going good, and today I became a member of the Dual Monitor club.

Nothing to special. Not the same, or the same size, but it's still cool. I'm totally liking it so far. I think I'll enjoy it. I'm doing some pretty serious Multitasking at the moment.. lol. Anyways I got a 19inch LCD by Dell, used only 6 months by a 65 year old guy at his office at home. Seems brand new.. and the kicker is. I paid $70 Bucks USD for it.. not bad at all. it does the Vertical Rotation and everything good.. Here's a few shots of my system and the new Dual Monitors. It's probably not how I'm giong to keep them sitting, but works for now. let me kno if you have any suggestions or helpful things for a Dual Monitor user.

Thanks!

looks good gunther.

how's the 690 case going? how noisy is it? have you noticed if its very easy to get dents in the mesh?

Mesh doesn't dent easily, you can flex it out of shape a little, but it is easy to pop back into shape :)

you mean the front and top metal mesh that lines the case, ya like Mac said. it doesn't dent very easy. I've had no problems with that so far.. and if you do. you can bend them out really easily.

and depending on what fans you have, it can be loud as the sound has lots of places to escape.. But the stock Fans were pretty quiet. I'd suggest going to a hardware store and getting some O-rings from like the Plumbing department and placing them like gromets between the screws.. but the 0-rings are thiker and work better, anything that moves, the PSU. and all the fans. mainly the side panel. Rear, and top fans if you decide to add those. I have 2 antec 120mm ghetto fans on top that were free.. 3 speed control to low. i added a Silverstone FM121 to rear and turned it down, and the bottom mounted intake fan i got a Silenx 120mm x38 fan that works wonders. 70cfm at 18dba, it's truly completely silent, best one in my case IMO.

Hey Mac, did you take some pictures yet of your top and meshing you cut out.. I'm still interested in doing that.

yeah ok, well thats promising. problem with forums is its all opinionated, hear one thing, then hear something completely different. i tend to be a bit careless and the positioning of my case wont be ideal to avoid the odd foot or chair leg, so i'd settled on teh Antec P182 (bit of a price difference), bit more sturdy and silent than others, but hey, given those comments might just slide down to CM690, fork out for a few big fans and go with that cheers

ya well whatever you wanna do.. Mine is near the ground.. but elevated a lil bit. I think it will be fine. most people would be careful not to hit that I'd think..

the P182 is a nice case tho..I like my CM 690, just a great case for it's price

Ok here come the pics!
I don't have a before picture but you can look at your own xguntherc.

All you have to do is take off both sides and then push out the little plastic connectors holding the front panel on, then bend the tabs out and take off the front mesh. Once you have removed the restricting plastic, it will look something like this:
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk290/maccdaddy_photos/P6070041.jpg

This is what is under the front panel:
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk290/maccdaddy_photos/P6070040.jpg

The same thing but with the computer on:
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk290/maccdaddy_photos/P6070043.jpg

Push the front back on and this is the finished product:
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk290/maccdaddy_photos/P6070044.jpg

This is my cable management job on the back of the mobo, it was pretty hard to get the side back on lol.

Enjoy!

Cool, ya that looks nice, did you add your own grill, that round thing in the last picture???

Nice, looks like I might have to do that. ya my cables are about the same as yours.. the side bends a little, but not really. and it's hard to get back on. but the rest is perfect.. So how's the airflow, better?

Nah that grill thing in the pic is a filter and it comes with the case, it gets filled really quickly too so that's probably good.
The airflow I guess is better, but I have no numbers to back that up. The air is really restricted past that because the HDD cage is there and that is almost solid steel lol.

oh ya huh, forgot about the filter.. and ya they get full pretty fast, or you can see the buildup on the outside on the front of the case.. I always use dustoff, like every other week or so on it..
and ya solid metal is right.. the HDD cages was not the best idea in terms of Airflow.. but there design with the easy to use plastic bending mounts is great i think.. makes it simple.

cool thanks for the pics.. did you cut out the ones on TOP also??
