Optical drive internal LED illumination

This is a DVR-110D, but you can undoubtedly do something similar with with most drives, especially it's Pioneer relatives.

LED's are mounted inside the drive - there are of course constraints to be met here:

We must not foil the mechanical components of the drive, eg. the tray, and the light must go somewhere where we want it, e.g. out the front.

In this case, the top and bottom parts of the metal casing are removed from the plastic chassis, and a rectangular section cut out from the back of the upper steel casing, above where the rear connectors are. Two holes are drilled in the black plastic chassis, and LED's inserted.

The anodes of the LED's are connected to +5V on the main PCB via appropriate resistors.

Now here's the tricky bit.

One of the pins on the tray limit switch is grounded only when the tray is fully extended, so the cathodes are connected to that.

I'd show you specifically how it's wired up, but i can't be bothered removing and disassambling the drive right now.

Works as planned - the LEDs illuminate only when the tray has fully opened, and turn off immediately when the tray starts to close.

Ignore the img tags :)

Fixed now rikk :)

No United States based airline currently allows snakes in the main cabin area. However, some airlines allow snakes to travel as cargo.

its caus it has an /img tag, delete that and its fine.

Id be worried the extra light would weaken the read on the laser, but if it worked, cool.

As the LEDs are only on when the trays open I wouldn't be worried.

Thanx Master_Scythe.

Additional light inside this drive didn't have an adverse effect on its functionality ... a 3-light LazerLED mounted at right-angles to the disc.

I'm surprised you actually had the room to get one of those inside there, rikk.

Actually, there was a heap of room, probably even enough for another cluster ... I ended up using a couple of single LED's as well:

I went the 'easy way out' on the wiring, simply hooking into a 12V point on the PCB for 'always on':

The end up drive, with porthole:

So where would you solder the leads to have the LED 'on' when the disc is in and spinning?

You could run the wires around the back to where the molex connector is and tap into it there, but that would mean the light is on all the time then

Above kinks are useless ... Sorry about the deleted fikes on imagecave :-)

What I did was to pick up 12V rail off of an 'always live' connection the PCB (Pic 024).
Yes Khirareq, the light was always on, but in my situation that was OK ... the LaserLED is still working, over 5 years @ 24/7!

Yeah nah - Didnt mean there was anything wrong with it - Just wasnt sure if he only wanted the light on while it was spinning or all the time - Was just clarifying what would happen if he did what I said is all

How do I need to wire it up if I only want it to light when the disc is spinning?
