Ok i have this lcd: http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/3f5da29d0134079a2740c0a87f9c06bb/Product/View/Z4170 which has no backlighting. I was thinking of backlighting it coz i can never read it in the dark. :D Would it be possible to solder these SMD LEDs: http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/3f5d9ff100ff07822740c0a87f9c06e9/Product/View/Z7100 into the PCB of the LCD screen? I have looked under the actual screen and it has 4 sets of 2 holes through the PCB: 2 at each end of the screen - there was a baclight version of the LCD i have from dse a while back and the only difference was the backlight so they should work, right? ----- XP1800+ Volcano9 Coolmod, 256Mb SDRAM(soon to be 512PC3200), ECS K7S5A(soon to be ASUS A7N8X-X, 20+80GbHDD, Albatron GF4 Ti4280P Window,Black case, Baybus,Blue & Red Neons,4x 80mm fans, Crystal Orb on NB, 2x60mm fans 3DMARK2001-9000

Not likely sorry. If you compare non-lit and backlit versions the b/l one is a couple of mm higher to fit the led array underneath. The non-lit one also has a backing sheet on the glass(don't think it's removable) to increase the reflectivity. The PCBs are exactly the same though, thus the allowance for backlighting on the basic model. ----- Hey sexy mama, wanna kill all humans ----- Innuendos... if the leds fit and the holes actually go to the A K then sure go for it, if they don't use EL paper in stead which would work and is used on lcd's as well ----- If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect, why bother practicing? email- valimont666@hotmail.com

I beleive that most of the light is blocked by the reflective backing sheet. ----- Hey sexy mama, wanna kill all humans ----- Innuendos... I always thought they were Italian suppositories

meh so rip it off a guide for replacing the filter here: http://www.twistedmods.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=74 i believe the polerizing filter is the same/combined as the reflective backing sheet ----- If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect, why bother practicing? email- valimont666@hotmail.com

No I'm afraid you have the wrong idea of what I'm talking about. The polarizing sheet is on the front of the glass, the reflective coating is on the back of the glass. The backlit version does not have this coating so it can allow the light to shine through. This is from the horses mouth, I have both displays opened in front of me. ----- Hey sexy mama, wanna kill all humans ----- Innuendos... I always thought they were Italian suppositories

well you could hook them up but you would need to get rid of the shiny stuff as daviej37 said. daviej37, any ideas, turps, wet 'n' dry, i've got no idea as i don't have one, ----- If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect, why bother practicing? email- valimont666@hotmail.com

Once you take the thing apart, you may never be able to get the contacts to line up properly again, but you might. I fragged a LCD this way http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=2&c=18&t=546 for those who are too lazy for Forums Search and expect people to explain things twice, which i'm mostly happy to do ----- "Overclocking the processor is not recommended. I don't think those LCD modules include inverter circuitry to provide ~100V for EL material, you'll need a seperate inverter. It won't look perfect, but no DIY backlight method will, so i'd say solder high intensity SMD LEDs either side and hope you get enough light to see by. Or buy a cheap backlight LCD from Oatley Electronics ----- "Overclocking the processor is not recommended. if you do remove the backing and place leds under there you still need somthing to diffuse the led light EL lighting may work, better chance then leds. ----- owen@owenthegreat.com www.owenthegreat.com Pifast 4.1 (1,000,000): 9.53 Seconds!!!
