Would have thought you just hook the fax up to the voip port on the modem and get it to dial the number you want.

It's not quite that easy. You will need to check if your TA and VoIP provider support the fax codecs(Eg T.38) My guess is that any current hardware would support the codecs, but your provider may not, or may charge an extra to allow the codec.

The big problem with using a fax machine on a VoIP line, is that the codecs used to compress the audio are lossy, and as such, distort the audio waveform.

In particular, they are often based on Discrete Cosine Transforms, that do not preserve the phase of an incoming signal. The human ear can't hear phase differences, but a modem can .

I think there is a situation where an internet fax machine could be useful. I invisage such a device in this form:

o Embedded device running some minimalist OS (e.g. µClinux, µCOS-II, VxWorks, QNX... whatever)
o Has an ethernet device for hooking to the internet via existing link
o Has phone socket for hooking to a phone line for dialup and/or ADSL.
o Text can be entered via LCD screen + keyboard -- LCD is touchscreen-driven.
o Scanner/Printer built-in for attachments of various types.
o Handset/headset socket for standard telephone use

The idea, is you build this device... it functions like an ordinary fax/phone, but can also function as an internet fax/phone. Internet faxing would probably be just a frontend to email -- that is, "faxing" to an internet fax would be simply a case of sending an email to it -- and it would "fax" documents by contacting a SMTP server, perhaps using PGP to ensure privacy.

I can't do it all, I simply don't have the resources. But I can work towards the software solution -- a company will need to come up with appropriate hardware to install it on.

sounds reasonable, but not everyone has the ability to use email as a mode of communication. In my organisation, they very much frown upon generating email addresses for this sort of thing, and consider using personal email addresses for this purpose to be bad.

I've had a lot of difficulty using "Fax from the Desktop" software. I'm convinced it is possible, but the security aspect is a nightmare.

smadge1: Well... corporate cultural issues are issues I'm not aiming to try and solve. That's a people issue.

This is merely a solution to some of the technical issues, such as the requirement for a high-maintenance desktop personal computer.

Plus, it's only 1 extra email account. A fax email accuont, much like one qould require a Faax telephone line.

Just on a side note: Didn't XP have something in the printers and faxers, it was one of the built in software features that I'm sure allowed you to fax something, no? Maybe you scanned something and then that software sent it via fax or something...
