Hey Guys, Well its time for my 7 year old little bro to start using the net :) As we all know about the amount of shit out there I was wondering if there is a way to block ALL websites except for ones allowed by me. He will use XP sp2 and what I want to be able to do is block EVERYTHING first up and only allow ones I add as I check them out. Hopefully this can be done without any other software if possible. Thanks Everyone. -----

Net Nanny, Cyber Patrol, most of these types of programs should have white lists to block out anything that you don't allow. ----- What's wrong with this picture? We're talking to a giant, floating head. Open your eyes, They are blue I can see right through you.

This can be achieved using IPSEC. Not the easiest thing to configure but it does exactly what you want and is part of Windows XP pro. Start > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy. Then it is the icon in the left hand pane that says "IP Security Policies on Local Computer". You can create filters using ports,IP addresses and protocols. Does a whole bunch of other stuff too, like Network encryption. Whether or not you will be able to use it depends on how much skill/perseverance you posess. Someone that knows what they are doing could set it up in a few minutes. You don't need to do that.... Just go to.. Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings In the proxies put in some bogus host.. In the "Do not use proxy server for.... " put in the sites you only want to allow him to visit. -----

sponger's method does sound a lot easier :) . . . there is also a registry setting that locks the proxy config. (i don't have it on this PC so you'd have to look it up) Edit: Locking proxy changes for IE: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel] "Proxy"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel] "Proxy"=dword:00000001 There is one benefit of doing it via IPSEC though . . . it is machine wide and affects every application, Firefox included Edited by nocelery: 9/2/2005 8:54:50 AM ----- before enlightenment . . . chopping wood . . . . carrying water after enlightenment . . . chopping wood . . . carrying water

nocelery - that will work, but it's really not the intended use for local security policies and it might get a bit annoying to add and remove sites from there. A better solution would be to install linux on a spare machine and run squid. You can use squid's acls to do exactly what you want. For example:
acl mybrother src 192.168.255.5 #Your brother's ip address acl whitelist dstdomain "/etc/squid/whitelist.txt" # List of allowed sites, one domain per line http_access allow mybrother whitelist Edited by luser: 10/2/2005 1:20:20 PM ----- That's it sir, you're leaving The crackle of pigskin The dust and the screaming The yuppies networking The panic, the vomit The panic, the vomit God loves his children, God loves his children yeah!
