The guide to getting a stable internet connection on Bigpond cable, while using a router

It is a common problem for many BPA users to get a stable internet connection if they are using a router, especially if the router has got a built in Bigpond Login client. Many people need to power cycle their routers daily because their router seems to have locked up completely, other people just get disconnected once in a while. Either way it is rather annoying.

What is more annoying is that the ISP does not support routers, and tell you to contact the router manufacturer. The router support says it is the ISP and tells you to contact them..

I would like to give a few hints on getting a stable connection, and welcome any comments/success/failure stories.

Firstly, ensure you have got the newest firmware version for your particular router. If you ring up helpdesk, this is one of the first things you will be asked to do, and it is not worth hanging on hold for half an hour only to be palmed off.

Secondly, specify your DNS servers in the router setup. I am not quite sure how this helps, but it seems to stop a majority of router crashes. I have even heard of some ADSL routers with bugs in the DNS retrieval code, and router uptimes being greatly increased. Look below for a list of DNS servers for your state.

After this, turn off your modem for 30 minutes, let bpa forget about you, and hopefully you should get a better uptime next time.

Another thing that I have heard (unconfirmed) is that disabling DHCP on some routers will stop many router lockups.

Anyway, if someone wants to give it a go and post about your success/failure, I would like to know.

From what I've heard, get a D-Link DI-624 - I know several people (including friends and neighbours) who run it on bigpond cable without a problem! This is, of course, a wireless router - but they are dirt cheap and come with a BPA client.

I don't think they have abnormal setups (only 1 of them uses the router as the DHCP server though) but they rarely have the heartbeat/disconnection problem.
