Much as I love both GNU and Stephen Fry, that video runs like a dog on both Opera and Safari : p. I know it would have been traitorous to the cause, but couldn't they just have used Flash?

They should have just offered the vid as a torrent. Less strain on anything. Going to see if i can score it somewhere, too much for dialup.

Yay!!!

Pretty quick from Japan.

I first started downloading Free software from the Merit Software archives while I was at Uni, had to Gopher and ftp them and transfer files to my home PC via 700k floppies, that was almost 20 years ago before the www.existed.

There was plenty of time to go have a smoke as a 150kb file used to take about 15 minutes to download.

A lot of the utilities I downloaded in those days went on to become an integral part of later operating systems.

Wow. Nice memories. I've only been "involved" since about 2000. Been a most enjoyable and educational ride.

Peter Brown, the FSF's executive director, added, "Despite all of the success brought about by the GNU system and other free software projects, we still need a determined effort to replace or eliminate the proprietary applications, platforms, drivers and firmware that many users still run. In this light, the video of Stephen Fry is not just a celebration, but a rallying call for the work that still needs to be done. During September we plan a number of further announcements leading up to Software Freedom Day on September 20 and the GNU anniversary on September 27."

I'm sorry, but I find that goal to be totally rediculous.

Free Software is great. But eliminating proprietary software is unrealistic. Software of all kinds exists, and will continue to do so. It all has it's place.

Your probably right Midnighter but the more free software there is out there the cheaper proprietary software becomes, as well as it having to interoperate if it wants to be in the game.

A totally free software world is as you say unlikely, but in striving for it the comoditisation of software is achievable.

Comoditisation of software would reduce the cost of doing business, the cost of IT in business at the moment is a burden that some businesses struggle to carry.
It would also allow IT to reach further down the wealth strata in society than it does now.

Even if not achievable it is worth striving for.

Finally saw the vid .. I must say Mr Fry is an most articulate gentleman, I have heard him speak in movies and thought that was the script talking, but no he really does speak well.

Worth watching to hear him speak as much as to hear the message {:)

+ eleventy billion.

I don't agree with their "we must replace commercialism" mantra. A tight and focused goal prevents software from doing too much badly, which is what I find free software does.

More power to them, but they will never make an Adobe Production Suite, for instance.

Hmmm, good vid. Saved. I can see myself using using this vid for future reference.

I'm curious, does Stephen Fry use Linux himself?

There is a Macbook air beside him, maybe he uses a Mac.

I am also a long time Linux supporter. I can't see Linux taking over the entire software industry and don't want that to happen either. We should have a bit of everything, I also don't want to see Linux and free open source software disappear because that would be very sad for all of us.
