Ouch.

The big issue with gaming is that DirectX has dominated the market too much.

If it was OpenGL, you'd have a port in no time (eg. Neverwinter Nights 1). As I understand, the latest patch of Doom3 provides OpenGL support. This means it should theoretically be possible to play Doom 3 without WINE.

Ultimately, Linux is a great toy.

I use it for:
Firewall
File Server
Mail Server
Media Centre

As it is also my 'backend' for media, it means my windows PCs, linux lappy and garage PC can all login and play music, watch TV/DVDs all from a central point.

Hope that gives a LITTLE insight. :P

ENJOY!

How do you do this exactly? Are you boring and use MythTV/samba, or is there something I'm missing out on? :P

Open Arena is like Quake/Doom - you can get that for free through Add/Remove programs on Ubuntu. Its pretty good, i play it in my spare time when im booting linux. Not sure how online play goes with it though, but id be suprised if you could beat singleplayer on the hardest setting :P

I dual boot, so i have XP, and Ubuntu on different drives so i can choose between them. That gives you the best of both worlds: Ubuntu for surfing, emails, music etc, and XP for games.

I actually find if i dont use XP for anything else other than gaming it doesnt turn into the annoying piece of fail OS it usually becomes.

Golly

Robzy:

There is a windows MythTV Frontend available.

It had to be simple for Fenn to be able to use if she wants it.

Furthermore, I'm getting xbox media centre up and running and using that to log onto myth.

It's an interesting design, at first I disliked it, but for a desktop system it works rather nicely though. For a server I think it would drive me insane.

It is nowehre near as useful as actually educating users about security would be. In fact, their method is arguably more insecure than just having root enabled and properly administered.

Actually, there's some great games companies out there that build linux versions of their games.

Check out Introversion for Uplink, Darwinia, Defcon and soon Multiwinia

Check out ABA Games http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/index_e.html

They've got some kick arse arcade games

In terms of compatibility with windows games, Aparently DirectX 8 is the sweet spot at the moment for Wine. This is purely anecdotal though...

If you've got a decent computer, there's always the option of running a virtual machine. Some VMs actually support 3d rendering now.

I tend to use "sudo su -" as this gives you a full login shell, as if you had logged in as root.
