i am trying to update my ubuntu 8.04 through the update manager and it tells me the following:

could not apply changes!
Fix broken packages first.

also through the synaptic package manager, the reload for updates happens really fast missing a lot of repositores and claiming that they are not they're not there or failed through the descriptions when it goes to download the fres listings

i understand that it means there are broken packages floating around its just not really specific on which ones.

is there a way to check for these "so-called" packages and fix them before it screws up or just keeps screaming that at me.

It's aimed at people wanting a job as a Unix network admin, not point-and-click Windows Cowboys.
