Linux Distro Guide V2

There are many threads in the Open Source Forum with questions about what Linux (or other) distro is the best for them. This guide's aim is to provide a central source of info on Linux distros. The idea is for Atomicans to contribute reviews based on their Linux experiences.

A Wiki categorised by Distro is at http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/ULOS/Vendors

Special thanks to Redhatter for creating this wiki and for hosting it. Thanks also to Green house for creating the first version of this guide.

Now we need some newer reviews to update the existing ones.

No SuSE? What about Mandriva? Lindows is now Lycoris. What about RHEL/CentOS?

I haven't used any of the distros you mentioned so I can't review them myself.

EDIT: I have added the distros you mentioned, but without reviews.

I need people to contribute reviews on popular distros such as openSuSE, Mandriva, MEPIS, CentOS & PCLinuxOS + more. It would also be good to get some newer reviews for most of the other distros already listed. This is definately a work in progress, which needs support from other Linux users.

I just did some research on the Net & found that Lycoris is not linked to Lindows. Lindows has in fact changed its name to Linspire. -> http://www.techweb.com/wire/26804598

I might be able to do a review on Ubuntu from a new users point of view... but it won't be for a few weeks atleast (finishing up year 12).

Thanks, but I'm not going to use content from another site. I'm sure that would breach copyright.

The idea of this thread is for Linux reviews by Atomicans for Atomicans. :)

Thanks for taking this over techguy I don't use that account any more and I haven't got the time to keep it updated but I might be able to write the occasional review

No probs man. I missed the ":P" in your post. :-)

I can see now that it was intended as humour.

I didn't realise that Redmond Linux became Lycoris.

Thanks for pointing that out spielentwickler.

Idea... why don't we wikify this? Keeping a database like this up-to-date is a right pain-in-the-arse.

There's a list of vendors here: http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/ULOS/Vendors

Note this list was created waaay back in the first revisions of the AtomicDOC Wiki. This was before Ubuntu came into existance.

Perhaps we can do something similar to the Linux on Laptops DB?

Update: This is how I'd suggest doing the reviews: http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/ULOS/Debian

I'm currently using Kubuntu 6.06, but this afternoon sometime i'm going to be installing ubuntu 6.10. It's not 6.06, but 6.10 will be being released in november, so I'm willing to do a review on the prerelease version :D

Yes, that's correct. That's why it says "Stable Version". :D

I like your idea Redhatter. Any suggestions on how to go about doing something like this? Is anyone here interested in being a part of this? Maybe we could change this thread to a link to a Wiki with similar content in it.

I would like to get some feedback from users of this forum on this subject.

Do you think that this forum needs a sticky with this sort of distro information in it? If so, do you support creation of a Wiki to serve this purpose? If not, what alternative options would you suggest?

Please post your views on this...
