Most Linux distros are precompiled for i386, so an old school Pentium shouldn't be an issue. DSL seems to be a good suggestion, although you'll find X is rather hungry... maybe consider running this machine as a server?

100 millihertz? 0.1 Hz?

Wow that's slow.

If you've let the smoke out of your CPU you've probably overclocked it a little hard.

Smoothwall linux (if it still exists (?) ) is hand-carved for such systems to be used as routers or whatnot...

I'd personally be putting Windows NT 4 SP6 on it. It's fast, it's a rock-solid OS, and it's not Windows 95, and it'll run Firefox, T/Bird and mIrc quite happily.

What exactly do you want to do with it?

Ed: Yes, Smoothwall does exist, 2.0 fixes8 is the current version.

It depends on the purpose of the box. Smoothwall makes a router -- that is it. It won't serve as a desktop or Xterminal.

Yeah, it falls, crushes XP and all its plastic trims, and keeps rolling on. My longest uptime record was an NT4 box. I remember I had to write a custom app to track uptime over 30 days or whatever GetTickCount()'s limit is...

And still, smithy hasn't told us what he intends to do with this sub-1Hz machine...

ZFS rocks harder than a Pink Floyd tribute to a Led Zeppelin cover of a Gorky Park song, being played on a Fender fed through a Marshall, being listened to by a mosh pit.
