Hey all. I am looking to purchase a good sized music player. Being able to play multiple formats is a plus but only mp3 and ogg is essential. Also appearing as a removable drive rather than needing to use software to update it is a deal breaker. I am using Ubuntu if that has any affect on your recommendations. Looking at around NZ$300 but will go up for quality. :)

Knowledgable atomicans can you help me buy the right player?

The Rio Karma (20gb and 40gb models) play mp3 and ogg, but don't appear as a hard drive, instead you have to use the network port on the dock that it comes with to transfer songs using linux. They also don't make them any more, but ebay has a few of them. I use it, it's a really good player, just don't drop it on the scroll wheel ;)

I'm looking for something like this as well. I wish ipodLinux was a bit more stable, 'cos I'd love the look and feel of an ipod with OGG compatability!

One of the iRivers or the iAudios might be what you're looking for.

JNC/iAudio M3 or even an M5, it works via drag and drop, no syncing required, plays ogg,wma,flac,mp3, it can even make use winamp playlists (I'm not sure if Xine clones those as well). I think mp3direct is a NZ online store that also ships to Australia, if you can get one with a Dock...
I've been using an M3 with both Windows and Linux for ~12months and have never had any problems with Linux...

This was mentioned on the SLUG mailing recently:

Looks like you get OGG playback from your iPod. I'd try it, but my iPod is old-skool 3rd Gen.
