MythTV and IP TV

Hi all.

I have built a basic HTPC (Win2K + myHTPC). Looks great, and works great for watching all my XviD encoded, err, home movies.

My internet provider is TransAct. They also provide me with TV via ethernet(UDP multicasts). I can quite easily stream 3 or 4 TV channels (at near DVD quality) to my PC and have them all up on the screen in their own windows (in VLC). Cool hey?

One of the the most excellent features is that I can watch one channel, and record say two or three others (if there was that much quality TV to be had).

I'd really like to nuke my home theatre PC and install, say, KnoppixMyth. But I don't have any tv capture cards. I was wondering if MythTV has the ability to capture the MPEG-2 streams coming in over the ethernet.

I can watch TV on my PC now by pointing VLC at an address like these:
udp://@239.193.0.2:8208 <-- is ABC
udp://@239.193.0.3:8208 <-- is SBS
udp://@239.193.0.7:8208 <-- is Prime
udp://@239.193.0.9:8208 <-- is WIN
udp://@239.193.0.10:8208 <-- is Capital
udp://@239.193.0.11:8208 <-- is CNN
udp://@239.193.0.12:8208 <-- is BBC etc etc...

Sooo, my question is
<drumRoll>
Can MythTV utilise internet TV streams as virtual capture cards?
</drumRoll>

Please, please please say yes. I would soo like to have this technology work for me...

Cheers,
JAso

Yes.

To eleaborate, I hacked a mythtv box (older version) to work with transacts streams.

Cant remeber exactly what I did for it (it was a while ago and I would have ti take a look at it), but i think I just used the DVB code and made it open and read from a port insted of a DVB card, put the channel list in the database, and had to do some hacked crap to reset the play back everytime the channel changed because of some sound issue. Wasnt much work at all.

Please note this was on an older and heavily modifed version of MythTV, but I would probably say it would be easier to implement in the newer MythTV code.

It was for a proof of concept / demo for them (transact).

If you feel like giving it a crack I can probably give you a few pointers etc.

I'd be extremely interested in this too (if TransACT ever rolls out all the way to Conder, that is...)

Holy crap. I've got so much wood now I think I'd give John Holmes a run for his money.

/me downloading knoppMyth as we speak.

Yay yay yay.

Update. I am halfway thru the KnopMyth download. It had just struck me. Do you think I would be better off getting a dist like, say, debian, then installing the latest stable build of MythTV, or do you think the KnopMtyh CD is OK?

hehe...

Well I prolly only be able to help you during the week... Let me go see if I can find the old transact unit :P

Knoppmyth or latest stable? Good question... Installing myth can be a biatch, but it is well worth it in the long run. A bit of linux knowledge is your best friend here. Either way you will probably need the source code for a little bit of tweaking (not sure what you get on knoppmyth).

Thanks for the offer of (weekday) help, but I don't think this is the kind of project I'll get done in a week. I've got a million other projects going at once. (2 year old daughter, MAME cabinet, moonlighting with 2nd hard hardware sales).

So while this has got me VERY excited, I think I'll slowly plod away at getting this to work.

I guess step one is to get MythTV working enough that i can watch all the current movies/clips I've got stashed away. Step two being to tweak the chanel rules so that it pulls the stream from UDP rather than DVB...

FYI TransACT is a fibre network which carries Video,Data and Telephone not like your typical ADSL setup..
