Linux/*nix/Free* on Laptops v2

Yep, received your email... after some page rearranging and cleaning, I managed to clean up the wiki and merge it into the AtomicDoc wiki.

On the Cobalts, I've created a second page to cover the x86-based Cobalts. They share similarities, but the procedure for setting them up is completely different. Whilst it's possible to run kernel 2.6 on the MIPS based machines (I've been running 2.6.8.1 happily on my Qube) the x86 ones are quite experimental. Apparently no-one's bothered to port the required patches to Linux 2.6.

Certainly I'll eventually get to putting more Linux/MIPS stuff up there... as the official Linux/MIPS page ( at http://www.linux-mips.org/ ) is woefully out of date.

Redhatter - check your PM's. If I don't respond, and your answer is yes, start your own thread and PM a mod.

Short note for the rest of you: I might lose my net access. If you need to contact me about anything past monday, PM dud_BOLT ( http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/viewdetails.asp?u=23896) as he should be able to get you in touch with me faster.

Okay everyone... before you go tack another post onto the end of this thread, see http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=2&c=16&t=2627

I've explained the wiki, and how to use it there. As I said there, feel free to contact me if you strike troubles, my contact details are on the wiki as well as in my profile on this forum and my website.

For the laptop database, see http://atomicdoc.hopto.org/index.php/ULOS/Hardware/Laptops

I've just edited the first post in the thread to link to hardware manufacturers in the wiki, instead of listing everything at once.

RedHatter is currently writing a new wiki to get around the issues with PHPWiki, if you can't edit feel free to post here.

PHPWiki is working once again... remember your username has to be a Valid WikiWord in order to authenticate. I'm looking at ways I can restrict this, however, as mcbridematt mentioned, I'm slowly cobbling together my own wiki system.

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?PhpForest has some details on what I'm planning. :-) I'll keep you all posted as to the progress. ;-)

Just a note... I finally got fed up of PHPWiki... and have ditched it for good.

I'm now using XWiki... which has been pretty good so far... although it still has quirks I don't like.

The page in question, therefore has moved to
http://atomicdoc.hopto.org/xwiki/bin/view/ULOS/Laptops

I'm still migrating some of the old pages across, which are still available at:
http://atomicdoc.hopto.org/oldwiki.php/ULOS/Hardware/Laptops

If you feel energetic... feel free to assist in the migration of this, or any other page on the old wiki. :-)

Oh goodie!

Just edited the Acer page with some new info, and a dodgy attempt to migrate Centrino, added info about ipw2200

No worries... I've locked the old Centrino page and cleaned the new one up a bit.

http://atomicdoc.hopto.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/MigrationGuide has some pointers to migrating pages... If there's anything I haven't explained... feel free to edit, or leave a comment. :-)

As mentioned in the page... please let me know when you migrate a page, so that I can lock the old one.

Migrated everything.

Some pages still need markup cleanup though. On some of them I got particularly lazy that I either a) cut + paste html or b) cut and paste HTML along with the worst abuse of sed and pipes ever..

sed 's/ class="tightenable top bottom"//g' cleanme.txt | sed 's/
/1.1 /g' | sed 's/
//g' | sed 's/
Notes:/
/g'| sed 's/class="tightenable top"//g' | sed 's/class="tightenable bottom"//g'| sed 's/--/-/g' | sed 's/
/\* /g' | sed 's/
//g' | sed 's/
/\* /g' | sed 's/
//g' | sed 's/
//g' | sed 's/
/1 /g' | sed 's/
//g' > cleaned.txt

edit: converted quote to sed to get around my lack of
.

Theres probably an option in sed to take multiple regexp's but I was too lazy :)

Whoa... nicely done mcbridematt . I've cleaned up some of the wiki syntax (cleaned out the HTML)

and I've locked the pages on the old Wiki. So from now on... please use the new wiki ... the other one is broken, and will soon be gone for good.

I've just upgraded the wiki... if it was broken for people, it should be back now. :-)

The database had to be reconstructed (XWiki uses a really weird schema). I concentrated on reconstructing pages -- so if you had an account previously, you'll need to re-register.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

In case you didn't notice the warning on the wiki itself...

The website has switched to a different hostname provider. From now on, http://atomicdoc.yi.org/ is the correct URL. Both the old hopto.org, and the new yi.org service have been active for 3 months now.

Renewal has come up for the atomicdoc.hopto.org alias, and I've decided not to renew, since the yi.org service is far superior.

The URLs after the hopto.org bit are identical though... so if you get a Host Not Found, substitute hopto.org with yi.org, and it should JustWork(tm).

added my part to the wiki - Dell laptops.

Caelum's XPS M1210

* Model: XPS M1210 (945 based)
* Distro: Slackware 11
* Specs:
o CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache)
o RAM: 2GB Hynix DDR667, CAS 5.
o HDD: Toshiba 60GB 5400RPM SATA
o Video: Nvidia Go7400
o DVD: Sony DW-Q58a(rebadged LiteOn SOSW-8x3S)
* Notes:

Very seamless install from the DVD ISO, works pretty much out of the box with the laptop, with only problems on the touchpad and audio, which i'm sure is only a very simple configuration change that is needed. Running KDE ok, with only resolution changes to the X conf. Will update this on success.

Also tried Ubuntu 6.10 AMD64 DVD ISO, but found it to be rather buggy, with lots of freezing problems.
