Thanks, I was worried nobody ever noticed that thread.

Maybe I should write a HOWTO and stick it on my website, too. And when Dell decide to finally give me my Inspiron 5150, I'll play around with it and document my findings.

Actually, now that I know about virtual network devices like eth1394 and usbnet, etc. the old method of dock detection isn't so practical any more. Maybe I could have it grep /proc/pci for the docking unit's SCSI adapter - cool thing about that is, it won't even need to load the huge driver for it.

W00t, building 2.6.2 kernel on new Inspiron 5150 now...

Hdparmed the hard drive, even without tweaking, gets 30 meg per second. With tweaking, 31. That is almost twice as fast as my old hard drive, and interestingly, it's also twice as large. Cache read is a muscular 533MBps (was 555 off Slack CD, i.e. before booting)

Processor owns, haven't checked its SMT powers yet (yet to boot in to new kernel).

One thing though, its IDE arrangement is weird, with hda being the CD tray and hdc being the hard drive. This means you have to be more explicit when saying what you want to cfdisk, etc.

The b44 driver (yep, the internal NIC is a Broadcom 4400) is blessed with the ability to check if the cable is connected/disconnected, yet, dhcpcd still feels like waiting it out.

nvidia's driver works great, uses this uber-clear monitor very well. Needless to say that X runs ridiculously well on this processor.

About to start migrating things from old laptop to new laptop, including source packages, then getting the system productive.

Will report any other l33tnesses as they become apparent.

Update: A few hours later, system pretty functional.

This graphic card is incredible. I get 80+ FPS in Armagetron at all full graphic options and 1280x1024 resolution. Who says Linux isn't for gaming?

Sound chipset is intel 8x0 as suspected, and as we all know, the ALSA driver for it can't do multiple channels. Maybe I could have ALSA from the 1.0.2 driver package instead of the built-in 0.9.7. Will get around to that later.

Not sure if it's really hyperthreading the way it should, though. It finds both processors fine, and calculates the right BogoMIPS, but since wmcpuload doesn't seem to like explicitly setting the CPU index (-c flag) despite documentation, I can't really 'know' if it's balancing the load very well.

Getting a 200FPS mencoder video encoding where I used to get 40 is pretty good though.

Confirmed HT use...

wmcpuload is smart - it looks at load over all processors, not just one. If I have one fierce thread going, CPU usage will be 50%! So I use -j3 in all makes to milk all 100% out of my processor (or, of course, -j1 if I feel like only having one 'half' of the chip working).

HT Linux is mad fun.

Update: Shoved ALSA 1.0.2c right in to kernel, rebuilt, installed, etc... STILL no multichannel sound. What's with that? It's a simple chipset isn't it?

I think you forgot to add Damon_s 's Dell to the list. Anyway, I might as well post it here so that you don't have to go to altorus' original thread... He posted on the original thread on Jan 21st...
Damon_S
Dell Latitude CPx
P3 500Mhz
128Meg ram
6gig HD
CD-rom
8Mb ATI Rage mobility Video card
14.1" TFT
Orinoco wireless pcmcia network card, bought seperately
cost NZ$550

Standard install of Mandrake 9.0 everything seems to work fine without any fiddling. Running IceWM, this is my first time out of Gnome and I like it. Took half an hour from fresh format to fully configured linux (had to format to get rid of the stench of windoze), now all i need is a Linux Inside sticker and i'm fully geeked up!

Oh yeah, I'll need your help to include @ctionM@n 's new lappy as I promised him to include his since he'll be away from the forums for a while.... I'll edit and include his lappy details later on, my email is acting up....

-edit-
Here's his exact email text to me:
Laptop details are:
Sony Vaio PCG-FR825P P4 2.66GHz
512MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM
ATI Radeon Mobility IGP 345M GPU
Ultra ATA/100 60GB HDD
Sony DVD+/-RW DW-U50A
ALi 537 sound
Realtek 8139C+ NIC

OS details are:
Boot1-
Gentoo Hardened-2.6.1 kernel sources
Distcc is the only service running
ACPI power management
Previously had kernel 2.4.22 and 2.6.1 gentoo-sources running
without any problems

Boot2-
OpenBSD 3.4 Release
APM power management

Both-
run XFree with vga/vesa drivers (can't get the ATI ones to work yet).
Fluxbox WM

Everything worked fine from the get go except the ATI driver support in X (and
I don't need OpenGL so will probably stick with the VESA Drivers.)

Thanks, dude.

Yeah, because mcbridematt helped you :P
Anyway, I'm thinking of putting linux on mine. Probably Mandrake 9.0, cause it's the only distro that I have on CD that works.

Anybody knows him personally? I've sent him PM but he didn't respond to it. He's supposed to stand-in for altorus who went AWOL, now he's also went AWOL.

I got gramyre to have this thread stickied, but now he didn't take the initiative to update it. I hate to see such a good reference thread goes wasted.....

snakeoil: is that your site? looks good. Will have to go through it soon.

Slace: erm, I ain't have any idea. The Linux kernel might handle it.

I just keep SpeedStep enabled in the BIOS and the CPU will go at it's own will.

Woohoo i finally have a properly installed distro of linux on my laptop! :D
I previously have had knoppix installed to the harddrive but that was cheating :P. I also had FreeBSD 4.9 installed which was good but i couldnt get the usb mouse to work even after a lot of googling and even asking here but thats something to try again later on i guess.

Ashy's Slackware laptop:
Toshiba Satellite A10
2.4GHz mobile Celeron
256MB RAM, 40Gb
Slackware 9.1
Microsoft USB Wireless Optical mouse works but i had to recompile the kernel first for it to work.
I compiled in ACPI but i havent had a chance to check whether its working or not yet.
