I suppose it's a bit like this:-

Very innovative of Microsoft, where do they get these original ideas?

PhotoSynth is quite a bit more advanced than Virtual Tour software.

Stitch together a number of photo's in a 3D panorama...

...where's the difference?

There are plug-ins available now for photoshop and a University Course in how to do it.

This wasn't Micrsoft's idea.

A person comes up with the idea, has a workable project and Microsoft funds it / supplies additional resources.

Pretty much why a lot of companies start up and have Google buy them, Microsoft do the same thing.

As do Apple which is why I can pan and zoom 3D panorama's on my iPhone using surface multitouch.

A uni course in how to stitch photos? what a joke. I could teach that :P

PhotoSynth is a lot more complex, it lets you change the co-ordinates of your view point in 3D space and move around objects, it builds a effin 3D world in point-space.

The fact that it can do it hand held

A virtual tour or 3D pano taken from one point, obviously, does not.

So a "virtual tour" of Notre Dame on a Youtube clip...

...again where's the difference?

It's not something new.

Bahahahaha!

Fantastic news, I think I shall have a play with this. I remember having seen mention of it a year or two back.

Not impressed using Linux it looks like a blank green background with some text...

"Unfortunately, we're not cool enough to run on your OS yet. We really wish we had a version of Photosynth that worked cross platform, but for now it only runs on Windows.

Trust us, as soon as we have a Mac version ready, it will be up and available on our site."

"Minimum System Requirements

Important: Photosynth makes heavy use of your graphics hardware. If you have an older graphics system, Photosynth may not run. Also, Photosynth requires that your graphics acceleration be set to full.

Operating System: Only Windows XP (SP2 or SP3) and Windows Vista are supported at this time. Running Windows on a Mac? Photosynth runs under Boot Camp only. Parallels and other VM software cannot run the viewer.

Web Browser: Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, and Firefox 3

Memory: 256 MB of memory is a bare minimum; 1GB is recommended.

Graphics: Minimum 32MB of graphics memory required, 64MB or more is recommended. Photosynth runs on some DirectX6 capable cards and all DirectX7 cards."

At least I can view PangeaVR through readily available browser plug-ins or watch marketing videos on youtube.

sooo... now terrorists can just take this app, and use available online tourist shots to create 3D walk thrus of possible targets?

sure beats going there to scope it all out huh?

What the hell good is this? I already dread grandma's video tours of shit, but now she can stitch her old pics together and torture me some more.

meh.

It doesn't even work, while I was in windows I downloaded and installed it, created one out of some photo's I uploaded then clicked view.

Ended up in an endless loop of download the software whenever I clicked the thumbnail (Firefox 3, XP sp 3, I.E 6 was also a spectacular failure).

It's called Harbour Bridge if you can find it among the hodge podge of results which come up under those search terms.
