Editor like gEdit?

Hi all.

I love Gedit. Seriously. It does everything EXACTLY the way I want it to.

But I'm on windows.

Basically, I'm looking for a programming editor that does Folders As Projects, and PHP syntax highlighting. That's about it. Nice and simple, and that's the only functionality I want...and yet I can't find one. They all do too much, or not enough... :S

I use UltraEdit a fair bit at work, you can add syntax highlighting files, so I'd imagine there's a PHP one. As for adding folders as projects, not sure but check it out anyway.

I do believe that Notepad++ does syntax highlighting for php. No idea about Folder As Projects though

Will it play nice with cygwin?

I realise this is all hacky, but hey, if you like gEdit... :P

Not really. I've got it running, *once* under cygwin. And most [if not all] plugins refused to play nice :P

Since you don't just want a replacement, it has to be actual gedit for whatever reason, these steps can get it running under windows

http://live.gnome.org/Gedit/Windows

I don't understand why you cant have a replacement for such a basic texteditor though. Most of the ones listed will do PHP syntax highlighting, and project folders.

No idea what project folders are... Crimson Editor is basically a free version of UltraEdit and it does do projects (and PHP) so maybe it's what you want?

If you want the latest version go to: http://www.emeraldeditor.com
The one at crimsoneditor.com is pretty old.

Also check out NotePad++, it seems to be quite decent. You'll find most editors in windows will have more features than gEdit though :P

I am guessing he means not having to have a project file, but just have all the classes compile fine by being in the same directory. Which is what they should do anyway. If it is something else, he is using a plugin, and he could just get a similar plugin for Notepad++ or whichever.

What he said :)

Folder as a project. No messing about with project files.

*shrugs

I don't compile as such, I do scripting work.

Girvo,

Seriously, Notepad++, or any editor with syntax highlighter and a compiler addin would be all you need, there are many to choose from.
