[ACT] What would we need for a successful gaming trivia night/LAN party?

I'm still keen on the idea of holding our own games trivia night at the same time as a LAN party in a month or so instead of waiting around for one to come around. I certainly have never held one myself though, so I'd love to hear some opinions on what we would need. For the moment, my thoughts are on:

1. Alcohol. Every trivia night we've been to, we've had access to alcohol. Does that mean we need it? I don't know, I don't drink. What do you guys think?

2. Diverse questions. Not just diverse in terms of subject matter (different gaming eras and platforms), but also the nature of the question. Musical questions, the "spot" questions, true or falses, who am I's...If we have a projector or big screen we could maybe do a name that screenshot type question too! Any other ideas?

3. A good host! Since I'm probably going to be devising a lot of the questions myself, I'll probably end up asking the questions, but I don't feel that my voice is especially charismatic and easy to listen to. Do we know anybody who might be good at talking over mikes/intercoms? Is someone who's really good at talking especially important?

4. Teams...we wouldn't have nearly as many people as the games trivia night at the labour club. Would you guys be comfortable with tackling questions of my devising with teams of about 4 people?

5. Prizes! I'm well stumped on this one. I don't really know what we could possibly give to a room of gamers that they wouldn't have already besides, well, more drinks! And pizza. Hmm.

6. Hardware...trivia is going to need a microphone and loudspeakers at a minimum. I've tossed the idea of making a web based quiz since it feels like, well, a test! And thats no good! What else might we need? And does anyone have a microphone? =]

7. Varying difficulty. I've considered making all the questions relatively easy. Such that anyone who has played the appropriate game for about 5 hours would know the answer, and the difficulty would be in questions for games you have not played. But now i'm thinking that I need hard questions too, just to make people go "Oh God I should know this." Sound good?

Please let me know what you think guys! If there are any games, platforms or eras you feel must be included then feel free to suggest =)

If there's not enough interest then I'll just organise an ordinary LAN party as usual, except it will probably be just one day/night since people don't usually have the strength for two straight days.

Sounds like you've got most of this organised, you don't need alcohol at these things, just make it BYO and let people decide for themselves ;)

Other then that, you just need people in general.

Whee, a reply from one of the 4 or so people who've been to my LANs xD

Yes, I think i have everything except people. Kinda the most critical part!

You will need some way to keep people entertained while marking the answer sheets.

Alcohol can help with that. But in general people will keep themselves entertained. Maybe some background music. :)

For entertainment, put out those giant white paper table clothes (butcher's paper will do) and a packet of textas for each table... plus bonus points for the most interesting images created.

Usually the problem with LANs for me is time :\ for example I know I have the next 2 weekends booked, not exactly an uncommon thing to be honest.

Depending on the date and if another sydney sider wants to go / give me a lift for petrol money, your LAN will need me and my systems.

I can bring the following for lanning / trivia / boozing;

XPSM1730
My Personal Rig
EEEPC
5 port gigabit switch
As much booze as fits into my ride's car.

I am a little worried about how to keep people entertained while I mark the answers. Being at a LAN party, it'd be quite easy for people to go and start a game which they certainly won't finish by the time I'm done.

I've already been thinking about some game themes that would make great trivia/game show music ;) No I won't tell anybody, I wanna see how many people's ears perk up and say that they know the songs xD

I don't have a room booked as yet. It would probably be Tuggers again as they've been good to us for the past 3 or 4 LANs, whatever it is.

For a date, I would hope for one saturday in late september or early october.

Have a second speaker as well - Someone who can cover for you if you need to pee of if theres a technical issue which needs sorting - For emergency use

I dont mean to sound rude sorry, but I think your looking at a lot of stuff to handle all by yourself - I think, and we know my thinking is flawed so I may be way wrong, but I think you should find someone to help you out if you havent already

Second speaker does sound like a good idea. Beats me who would want to do it though!

I don't have any idea how you'd think that to be rude, you might be right. The games trivia night we went to last time was certainly organised by a lot of people. So far the only help I've enlisted is Morris with some game questions. I don't know what other tasks I can delegate.

I'm more interested to know which group DOESN'T draw a penis. :P

And I really haven't been a big help on the game questions with the little time I've had :(

At least I now have a place to live so I might be able to get my computer up soon.
