Official Atomican Location Database V 3.0 (AtomicDOC Wiki)

Advisory: Site should be back up now... following a switch from mod_proxy to mod_jk.

Hi All...

nodnerb decided to resign from the job of maintaining the old Atomican Location Database[1]... and so I've suggested that we use a Wiki page for this purpose.

The new V3.0 database can be found at http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/LocationDB

To update your records, you'll first need an account. You can register here: http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/RegisterNewUser

Once you've done that... log in, and hit the "Edit This Page" button. There's a WYSIWYG editor for updating the page, or under "More Options", the "Edit Content" will let you type the wiki code directly. You can also do cool stuff like grab a PDF dump of the page, attach files, or have a discussion down the bottom. :-)

Linking to the DB: To assist with navigation, XWiki throws in anchors under the same name as the heading. I've exploited this, so it's possible to create a URL pointing at a particular region.

e.g. My little suburb is listed here:
http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/LocationDB#The+Gap

Other Examples:
- All Queensland: http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/LocationDB#Queensland
- Sydney: http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/LocationDB#Sydney
- Those in hell: http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/LocationDB#Hell

New Zealanders will notice I've moved NZ down inside the International section -- last I checked, New Zealand was not a state of Australia. ;-)

When adding new posts -- this isn't all that clear on the wiki page -- find the appropriate place in the code, and type your entry as follows:

1 Major Location
1.1 Region
1.1.1 Suburb/Minor Location
* Your Nickname <i>*Special Ranks (if any) *</i>
[Send PM> http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/privatemessage.asp?u=Your User ID ]

Optionally... you may pinpoint your location on Google Maps ( http://maps.google.com ). This information can also be tacked onto the end:

[Google Map> http://maps.google.com/.... full URL here ...]

Just use the "Link To This Page" address as your URL. :-)

If your region doesn't exist ... create it. :-) The Wiki syntax is pretty simple. There's documentation on the right-hand pane when you do edits. Or you can use HTML.

The site is hosted on my own infrastructure, using XWiki running on Apache Tomcat 5 under Gentoo Linux. Normally this box is pretty reliable, and for the type of media being dished up, should be adequite.

Hostname/Domain Issues: Recently my hopto.org domain expired, and thus AtomicDOC became unavailable for 24 hours. I've re-activated this domain, and so it should now be available... but I probably won't bother re-activating it when it expires in a few months time.

So over the next few months... the old name will continue to work. If you happen to see a reference to the hopto.org address, simply substitute hopto.org with yi.org and your link should work. The new hostname is also available on IPv6, which wasn't possible via no-ip.com (who own the hopto.org domain).

Google Map of Atomicans:

I've just started a Google Map of Atomicans, which can be viewed at http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/GoogleMap

At the moment, not many people are on (just me at time of writing), but adding yourself is easy -- even easier than the other list:

(1) Go to http://atomicdoc.yi.org/map/ -- find your location, click there, and note the latitude and longitude mentioned down the bottom of the page.

(2) Go to http://atomicdoc.yi.org/xwiki/bin/attach/Community/LocationDB and download atomican_markers -- open this in a text editor of your choice.

(3) Create an entry down the bottom (order doesn't matter, it'll be sorted by nickname by the script).

<latitude> <longitude> "<Nickname>" <User ID> "<Real Name>"

You can leave the Real Name blank ("") if you wish.

(4) Save the file, and upload it again, specifying "atomican_markers" as the target file name. It should replace the old version with your update.

Now view the map, and you should see a new placemark at your co-ordinates. You should also appear in the drop-down list up the top.

If there's any issues... I can be contacted on Freenode IRC or Austnet IRC... or email: redhatter at gentoo dot org.

^^ Works for me... I've tried across the network, and via the IPv6-to-IPv4 gateway at http://www.sixxs.net/.

What Wiki Name are you choosing? Also, are you filling in all the fields correctly? You should need Full Name, Username, Password and Email filled out.

Ohh... and try to keep the order if you'd please.

I've just reverted pinkus' update and moved his entry to the correct location.

If everybody kept sticking themselves up the top, we'd have a huge ugly mess -- it'd be pointless maintaining this listing. Please do us all a favour, and keep it all alphabetically sorted. :-)

Yerp. Alphabetically sorted, and if you live in the same suburb...say Melbourne, then the 2nd line alphabetic sort is by user name. Well, that's how I did it. Redhatter may just tell me to piss off and mind my own business.

No no no... that's correct. :-)

With the number of people down as being in "Brisbane", "Sydney" or "Melbourne" ... it'd be a nightmare trying to find people if it were all munged in any order.

So yeah, keep usernames in order too.

After all, it's not a contest ... if people turn it into one, I'll lock the page and a select group can maintain it, rather than having anybody being able to maintain it. I'd like to avoid having to lock people out if possible.

Just a bump... and an update...

I've changed the format subtlely -- in that it now has "Send PM", rather than the URL. The url can still be obtained by ye-olde right clicking and selecting Copy Link Address (browser dependant).

Another idea I had... I notice Google Maps now displays road information for Australian cities... Are people interested in a Google Map of Atomicans? I'm thinking of something like http://dev.gentoo.org/~tester/gmap.html -- It'll require some tinkering on my end (and probably isn't easily possible via XWiki), but it should be doable... and if people are interested, I'm happy to look into making it happen.

Well don't know what is going on my end redhatter
as I always seem to get the wrong page
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/atomicali/hopto.jpg
for an image of the page I get.
Any link on that page takes me to a page of some sort at http://landing.trafficz.com
So not sure what is causing this.
Cleared all caches etc. This is on the edu dept network through their proxy server so I am not sure if that may have anything to do with it.

Fixed... the domain expired.

I've re-activated the domain and it should be back up in about 5 mins or so.

I'll also look at registering an alternate domain (with another registrar), as I'm not completely happy with no-ip.com, features-wise.

Update: http://atomicdoc.yi.org is now online.

Important Notice -- atomicdoc.hopto.org is officially down. The new address is: http://atomicdoc.yi.org/

Just in case you didn't see the notice 3 months ago on the wiki...

The two aliases had been running concurrently for about 3 months, and the renewal of the hopto.org alias came up today. As the new alias seems to be working, I've decided to drop the hopto.org alias. It will cease operation immediately.

From now on, use http://atomicdoc.yi.org/ to access the wiki. The addresses are portable, so if you've got an old URL, substitute hopto.org with yi.org, and you should be fine.

Errm, there's a couple you can pick from:

o http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Hell,+United+States&layer=&ie=UTF8&sl <-- Hell, US
o http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Hell,+Norway&ie=UTF8&z=12&om=1&iw <-- Hell, Norway

There's apparently one in the Caribbean... not sure where though. ;-)
