Revisiting - user sigs and not wanting to see them

LOL Girvo.

So it looks like an option to hide sigs would really help this to make a friendly place to blind folk? I hear that quite a few blind people visit Atomic: Maximum Power Compatibility.

It would, yes.

That and there's enough non-blind people who'd appreciate this feature, too.

Now it's just a matter of getting the dev team to devote the required 5 minutes of dev time to implement it.

They still haven't managed to allocate the required 1 minute of dev time to implement my first point in this previous post: http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=4&t=4019&h=accessibility&u=

And yes, I know I sound narky and bitchy, but it is such a small request, it'd be nice to be at the very least acknowledged.

Looking at some past threads, going back as far as 2003, this seems to be the trend. :(

Nah, they'd done work on the website. Doing any work on these forums aren't exactly a profitable venture for them, though, since it's already up and running. Any more time they dedicate to these forums will do jack shit for their revenue stream.

Some forums add those stupid flash ads in the middle of a thread, which I think breaks up a thread even worse (as well as using up one's bandwidth). Yes, it's matter of priorities.

So email Dan Godden, don't whinge and whine, be proactive. Hell, you could even email him an example of the required code.

Seems it's more fun for him to whinge and whine over and over again.

http://www.philliphoffman.com/atomic/TTS.jpg select the text you want and click on the read button. Or tick the read clipboard and select the text you want and copy it, BAM!!!

I don't find it fun at all. This is the feedback area, after all, I was of the impression this was the place for it. There's not much point to it if we're just talking to ourselves. At least posting here provides opportunities for other users to raise their hands and go "Me too!"

But I'll try what 1shot suggest and email Dan. I will take an educational guess at his email address now I know hi surname and hope that he'll be receptive.

Um... what? I don't think I'm going to be alone i nthinking that's a fairly dense suggestion.

Firstly, the pain of highlighting and copy/pasting everybody's posts sans sig would make it far more annoying and far less efficient than just skipping forward over them.

Secondly, how do you expect a blind person to clearly identify where to click in order to highlight the necessary part of the post?

I'm sure you meant well, but that was a pretty silly suggestion.

What, that
A. you dont need to select the entire page. OR
B. that you are making it out that TTS's are a pain to use.

If you're blind, how do you know what parts of the page to select?

but i am asuming that he does know what parts to select "And I do have some vision, and read short posts with the naked eye, but prefer to use text-to-speech for rather long threads." http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=4&t=4019&p=0 that suggests that he knows whats what and where it all is.

if you were blind (as in 'all i see is a mash of blurs') then it would be hard to know where to select the correct text.

I do agree that having a visual disability and trying to 'read' atomic would be hard.

I can, but as I said previously, copy/pasting each chunk and TTS'ing it is going to be a lot less efficient than just selecting the whole thing and skipping through the annoying bits.

Let's put it into a visual perspective, and this is hypothetical, so please don't be pedantic. Imagine this page used a font too small for you to comfortably read. Would you honestly want to copy/paste each and every post into notepad/word where you've got a nice big font, or would you just copy the whole thing and scroll and skim?

I'd be doing the latter, and sometimes do.

True that would kinda suck...

does your TTS read from clipboard? coz mine does and its a crap load easier then copying and listening to everything i dont need to copy and paste (i dont want to know when every post was made or that the send PM link is still where it was 2 years ago or what the flavor of the month is when it comes to peoples sigs).

I am guessing the way you use a tts and the way i use a tts are a little different. For web pages i set it to read from clipboard and copy the bits i want... if its a book i copy bits into the text area and let it go through it (which is what i guess you do for pages if not have the TTS read the page from the program???)

I've used the automatic "read from clipboard" options before, and they kind of shit me, so I prefer to copy/paste into the reader and manually start it reading. Only a couple of extra key-strokes, but i nthe long run I find it much less annoying.

It's rather irritating if you're listening to a (properly recorded and produced) audio book, and then you decide to copy a URL to email to a friend, or if you're doing other legit copy/pasting to have your book interrupted by the TTS program launching into narrating something you don't really give a shit about. :)
