Revisiting - user sigs and not wanting to see them

Hi,

I've asked previously about this, but I thought I'd bring it up again as I've just noticed something...

On article pages which have an article, and then forum discussion about that article at the bottom of the page, the posts on this page appear without user signiatures.

It's lovely.

So, it's quite clear that the code is already there/not there, and that not displaying user sigs is easily done.

So could we please have this as an option we can set in our profiles?

Pretty please?

If these forums had the ability to embed images in signatures, then I'd be right there beside you, begging on my knees for this feature. Wait, you're on your knees too, right? It's not just me?

Anyway, this could be useful. For others, not so much for me considering the few trickly lines of text we are afforded now doesn't tend to interrupt or harm my browsing experience.

I wonder how accessibility software would be affected by the current state? I'm way out of the loop on this so I could be dead wrong, but if a person were using software to enlarge the fonts or read out the text, they'd get everybody's signatures each time either taking up screen real estate or being repeated repetitively, wouldn't they? That'd have to suck.

I wouldn't use it, but others might find it a useful feature.

Yeah, I think they just break up the flow of a thread. I'd dump them if it were up to me.

You've just scored more awesome points, because you've totally nailed it. I use text-to-speech software, and I probably spend more time skipping through crap than I do actually listening to thread contents.

It also becomes confusing when people quote users in their sigs. If you're not familiar with said sig, it can be hard to tell what is and isn't part of the thread.

That and it jsut slows everything down.

I just created an mp3 of my reader narrating http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=4&t=4261

It runs for 9 minutes 40 seconds, and the rate of speech is set to probably ~2x "normal" speaking rate.

(It's also worth pointing out, that without skipping, it takes 1 minute 40 seconds to get to the actual first post.)

I like the idea just because of this. Atomic: Maximum Power Compromise. Making the forums more accessible to blind people since 2008.

Some sigs are annoying. I read the post and then I see the sig which I think is part of the post that I've just read.

I've got a 500 character siggy on another forum.
On that forum, I can control the font formatting in the siggy.

Gross. :)

The font wouldn't bother me so much, as I'd probably be using text-to-speech (and come to think of it, I override fonts, anyway) but 500 chars... still gross.

Oh, 500 is limit that that forum will allow. Limit does include formatting code too.

Atomic would be so awesome if development of the site was opened up to Atomicans in a distributed-wiki-like environment :P

Unfortunately this is totally unrealistic.

I think it's the whole idea of a tag or signiture that's gone to pot. I've always thought a sig was there for putting something like "Rob" in, as an easy way to see who wrote the message and also to be courteous. Most people today find the 255 word limit as method to say something funny or informative, which yeah, breaks the thread in a way, but honestly I would only mind if I was using a non-sight method of reading.

It's like the same argument why we need visual Avatars. One the surface, your user name should be enough but forums are about individuality as well. Avatars and sigs are part for this identity thing. This forum just does not have the option is hide them from display which you can in some others.
