Geekier post counts for ranking system

Hi,

While this isn't a serious suggestion, it's just something I thought of and thought I'd share.

Keeping with the spirit of atomic, if I had've designed the ranking system, I would've done it like so:

(0+) Serf
(32+) Initiate
(64+) Learner
(96+) Apprentice
(128+) Journeyman
(192+) Charge
(256+) Disciple
(384+) Master
(512+) Primarch
(768+) Overlord
(1,024+) Champion
(2,048+) Guru
(4,096+) Titan
(8,192+) Immortal
(32,768+) Colossus

Or something like that.

Just some trivial thoughts I'd share while hyped up on red frogs.

Thanks. You can have a red frog. :)

You mean it'll never get implemented. That's true. Never working, that's bollocks, as it'd require nothing but the most trivial code changes that any novice computer user would be capable of doing.

I said geeky, not retarded. :)

I would, however consider doing something like prepending the word "Elite" to the users rank anytime their post-count ended with the digits 1337. Naturally those ranks would only be valid for a single post before reverting.

Too confusing. It may be geeky, but people think like people, not like machines.

Unless they're a cyborg. Beware of cyborgs. Are you a cyborg?

Well it is a kinda cool idea.

Needs something in the 40k+ range to keep those ultraspammers happy (pokes 1shot with a stick :P).

But that would disrupt the order. Much madness and such.

I'll get a team of devs on it straight away, working round the clock to fulfil this demand. Because we don't just want it, we need it!

Nice idea, but seeing as the majority of immortals and higher are green room whores, I don't think many people would get it. lol.

You're likely right, though it's not something they *need* to get, and this place is targetted at people who should get it, even if they don't. :)

But as said originally, it's an idea more than a suggestion. I am pleased that people seem to like it, though.

I liked the concept, as I said before, but something about it bugged me, as I also said before.

And it only just occurred to me what it was.

The thing is...

...the 96, 192, 384, etc. Those should be removed.

After all, we're talking about 1,000,000, 10,000,000, 100,000,000 etc. in binary, right?

But with numbers like 96, we get 1's in the middle for no good reason. The 1's should be restricted simply to the first digit, i.e. it should sit on 2^N. Because, remember, any number at all can be expressed in binary, so we should have some more patterns to it: so keep it to powers to 2. Just because it doesn't end in a 0 when written in decimal doesn't make it a very good number to use.

So...how long until we get this up?

Those numbers are made up of 2 powers-of-two added together, as you probably realise.

The problem with using ONLY powers of two is that it's far too exponential. For example, if we want to retain the current rank order and names, we'd have to start promoting rank at 2, 4, 8, ... posts for it to fit at all well. Otherwise, if we were to require Serfs to make at least 16 posts to reach next rank, the doubling nature of pow2 numbers would mean you'd need to make 2096 posts to get to overlord and > 131,000 for colossus.

I think some inbetween values can be tolerated in this hypothetical ranking system, just as long as they're only made up of power-of-two sums.

Frunj: What rank name would you suggest for 65536+?

Yes, Ecky, but what happens when we add 2 powers-of-two together?

If it's a regular power-of-two it looks like this:

10000 or 100000000 or 10000000000000 etc.

If we add two different powers-of-two together, we get something like this:

10001000 or 101000 or 100001 etc.

But you see, all even numbers are the addition of different powers-of-two's. Binary can represent ANY number, and all we're really doing is just making sure that the last digit is 0.

For example, if:

1001000 is acceptable, why not 1000010 or 10101010?

It should be power-of-two with no exceptions.

We could just remove some of the ranks. Besides, what's wrong with such a high post count for Colossus? It's meant to be almost unreachable.
