I know. I was just joking with the triple question marks.

Maybe it's a new meme that will pick up. :-)

So we can't say "sandpaper" in thread titles now? :-P

Pretty sure we've already done that, though. If someone swears in the thread title, they get socked.

Can I ask why we aren't allowed to swear in thread titles, yet we are allowed to swear in posts?

If I recall rightly it's got to do with the fact that people can freely choose to enter or not enter threads that are likely to contain swearing, but they haven't really got a choice on the forum index.

Mods would know better than me, tho.

I don't see that you can tell whether or not there is going to be swearing in a thread based on its title though.

As far as I recall, the no swearing in thread title thing came about due to community requests. From reading past threads on the subject, quite a lot of people seemed to feel (or at least, were communicating) that thread titles should be free from swearing. Some people indicated that thread titles are kinda 'on display,' as it were, and that having swearing in these titles kinda grottied up the forums. Text within a thread itself isn't quite as visible as a thread title, so perhaps therein lies the distinction for some.

There are lots of threads of discussion on this topic, if you forum search Website Feedback (entire threads, not just titles) for something like 'swearing thread titles' you'll find several threads where this issue has been discussed. Within those threads you will likely find your answers :-)

Because a lot of web filters block pages with swearing on them, and those who are at work want to be able to get into the forum sections and see what threads are going

Thats why I swear as much as possible - To get more threads blocked by peoples work firewalls

Section 3a :No material shall be posted on or transmitted through the Community Areas which violates or infringes in any way upon the rights of others, which is unlawful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, vulgar, obscene, profane, indecent or otherwise objectionable, which encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offence, gives rise to civil liability or otherwise violates any law.

Basically, that sums up why. It contravenes the Terms and Conditions of this site, therefore it is unacceptable.

We're *lucky* that the Powers That Be reckon that swearing in threads is okay. They could at any time take that away, if they so chose.

Besides, what have you really lost? The ability to be vulgar in a community? :/

Oh I'm not having a whinge; I just didn't understand it.

If anything, I think swearing should not be allowed at all.

Some forums have built-in censors, registered users can see the swear words, but visitors can't.
