Maybe I've just become too cynical lately, but the moment director started that thread I knew exactly what was going to happen. The sad part about it was my prediction was correct.

So you knew something bad was going to happen but didn't try to stop it?

Isn't there a law against that?

A law against not letting a thread go down a certain path? :P

Censorship occurs because other people think they know what's good for us.

Nope.

Censorship occurs because the owners of the site want to promote the attraction of a particular demographic. It has nothing to do with what is good for folks, and you of all people should understand that.

Sure. Not explicitly, but there's bound to be one that applies.

Kind of like walking past somebody who's drowning and not trying to save them.

It's a text thread, and he's not a mod. What the frak was he supposed to do?

No, it's more like considering going to a Neo Nazi convention wearing a t-shirt saying "The Jews will totally pwn your arses" and taking a pretty good guess at what the outcome will be.

When D posted that thread, and knowing peoples penchant for getting their nickers in a twist, that thread, to me was going to be predictable. Needlessly so too.

Can you clarify that a bit further, I don't get it. If the demographic is already attracted to and part of the site, indeed makes up the site, how does censorship help?

This is an example of a clear abuse of power, with the mod having the last say, without allowing any rebuttals.

I was making a broad statement regarding censorship in general but if you say that there is more to it by being a means to an end, then fair enough.

For the record, I didn't get my knickers in a twist.

I was the first to suggest that it wasn't the best course of action, but cringed whenever anyone attempted to crucify him for it.

And the final info that all involved laughed at it, to me, was the cincher that he didn't do anything wrong.

Girvo posted in the thread that if he had done it to a friend and posted it people would be laughing - which was true. I think the primary difference is that if Girvo had done it, it would be a small practical joke played on his friends.

Director's OP did not make it sound like it was a practical joke played on friends, though. It sounds like he took advantage (sans any negative connotations that word brings) of the situation for his own "lol".

(Oh, and how I wish there was a thread dedicated to this topic that I could discuss this in... :P)

TheSecret you're vendetta against the *ods and apparnetly our ability to delete posts is wearing a bit thin mate.

Speaking of vendettas, I think that Mods not having a firmer grasp of the English language reflects poorly upon this website, and thus Haymarket.

Quote by Mac Dude
This is the second time while I've been a mod that something like this has happened. In every other occasion it's been an accidental deletion, or, something that is much more common, the person finds their post in a different thread.

It is possible that a mod deleted seehund's post by accident, but it would be difficult unless it was RTM'ed which it wasn't.

Shouldn't there be some kind of record in the database that threads were modified, posts deleted, etc?

I'd understand if it were a case of "Only Daniel can see them and he's too busy for us to bother with trivialities", but that's not what I've seen.

Guilt?

What if he had done something wrong, but was forgiven for it due to the circumstances? That's different to doing nothing wrong at all.

I'm running lessons in the mod cave, but these things take time...

I'd understand if it were a case of "Only Daniel can see them and he's too busy for us to bother with trivialities", but that's not what I've seen.

If this were something that happened with any regularity, then we probably would get The Evil One onto it. But it doesn't, and the few times it does happen there has almost always been another explanation. Given how busy he is, he'd probably force-lightning us to death if we disturbed him over something that, while in another context could be quite serious, in this one is utterly trivial.

-80: Ultimately, yes, it does come down to censorship being people thinking they know what's best for us. In that respect, I don't se locking a thread on Atomic as "censorship" (although I admit the distinction is fine and probably artificial). We're not stopping anyone from saying anything they want to say -- we're stopping people from saying certain things here .

"if the demographic is already attracted to and part of the site "

That's a huge assumption.

How/why are people attracted to and a part of the site? Because of what it is. A small part of what it is are the rules. A simple example is pornography. It's not illegal but we don't show tits and bums here. Why? because it's not appropriate for the demographic I'm guessing HayMarket are trying to attract.

Sure, the mag, word of mouth, etc might bring people here, but what makes them stay?

A few people have made the comment that we are over-moderated, and other have counted that Atomic is probably the most relaxed large forum they have visited.

I can only comment on my experience, and I would have to say that this is the case - topics and behavior are allowed here that aren't anywhere else I visit.

And no, I'm not comparing Atomic with small niche sites with a handful of active users. They are not commercial sites, don't have a brand to protect and can get away with a lot more if that's what floats your boat.

Not in the slightest, simply that on the scale from "Nothing wrong with it" to "OMG you are a terrible terrible person and should be punished" I didn't think he was as far up as others did.

"Forgiven due to the circumstances"? What do you mean exactly?

I'm not sure how to make it clearer. He was forgiven. By the person who gave him the PC to fix. Because they forgave him. Due to, y'know, accepting it as a joke and not as an insult.
