Deleting posts for no good reason

I'm curious as to why a relevant post of mine was deleted from a one year bumped thread?

All I said was "And this deserves a one year bump why?"

And now it's gone.

Normally I don't get bothered by this sort of thing but that's bullshit to be honest. A one year bump usually get locked and the bumper reprimanded but no. Sure it was loosely on topic but FFS, why not just start a new bloody thread? And it's still there and unlocked on the front page of Green Room.

What the fuck is going on with this place?

Rapidly losing faith.

Was the thread eventually locked?

It shouldn't matter, deleting individual posts is just petty, and close to censorship. Unless they are obviously generated by a spambot or similar.

Well, unless there's a reasonable, valid explanation I'm considering throwing my card back in and getting the fuck out. Things are becoming a little too over-policed in here for my liking...not the free-spirited place it used to be.

Hmm... I'm not sure what to make of the bump to be honest. Most of the time a bump like that would be cause for locking. I dunno, maybe there are special circumstances about this one. Did anybody RTM it?

I'm not sure what the post was, so I guess I can't really comment on its deletion.

I looked at the thread when it was bumped and thought the new posts contained relevant info, and it had already fallen to the bottom of the front page, so I let it go on its merry way. Yes it was RTM'ed.

I'll find out if any mods deleted anything in the thread, usually we PM the person or leave a post saying what's happened.

I'll add, it's disappointing that the default assumption is that Mods delete stuff for no reason.

True, but with a lack of PM one can usually make that assumption. But with Assupmtion being the mother of all fuck ups I'll reserve judgement for the time being.

But srsly...it's not just me who thinks things are being over policed these days. The forums are becoming a little stale and formulaic. Maybe it's just the way things go with forums over time as this is the longest I've ever been on one but the place seems a little spiritless and listless these days...almost like it's just going through the motions and recycling the same old sanitised crap again and again.

My 2 cents.

I'll start from the bottom :)

So your evaluation is that the forums are lifeless and spiritless, and that this is due mainly to the overpolicing of threads. I'm not sure how the recycling of the same old crap is related to overpolicing. Do we ban new topics?

As far as sanitisation goes, the majority of deletions/removals occurs for bots either spamming or posting ads. The next most popular action by mods would be to warn individuals to stop getting stuck into each other. This usually occurs between a couple of people who get carried away and the mods ask them to calm down.

I’m scratching my head as to how the above actions are overpolicing and sanitise the forums. They would make up of 2/3rds of the actions taken by the mods, if not more.

Regarding your comment that a lack of PM leads you to your assumption that a mod removed your post for no reason, I'm not sure on what this is based on.

If a mod does something and doesn't post/PM a reason, it's usually because the real world required some attention and they ran out of time, or they made an honest mistake. We don't normally move/delete stuff just for the hell of it or to annoy people (I post my opinion to do that...)

EDIT : Regarding the post deletion, are you sure you posted something in that thread - the mods I've chatted to so far didn't touch it. But, I'm still looking.

Over policed? These forums are probably one of the most liberal, open and free forums going around.

Geeze, if these forums are over policed, I'd hate to see a forum that was "under-policed"...

I'd prefer to see the "deleted" posts stay i nthe thread and jsut have their bodies replaced with "This post has been deleted due to: ...." and indicate the moderator who did so.

This would make people more accountable, both mods adn the users. If user X keeps making posts that get deleted, then people are going to know it and they'll attract the scorn they probably deserve. It also makes it possible for the user in question to clearly see who made the call and enquire if they feel it was unwarranted.

At the very least, I would think it reasonable for an automated message from the moderator to be sent to the message poster telling them that one of their posts was deleted and why it was deleted, and also include the body of the offending post so that in cases where it's appropriate, the user can repost with necessary edits to make it acceptable.

I'd love to see it too.

If their is a mod that is deleting posts on their whim (and I'm sure there isn't) the other mods will be the first ones to want to see them kicked out of the forums!

well, virtually all the mods have checked in and nobody touched it, so I'm confused :/

Accidents can happen, so if one of us deleted something by mistake, it was just that, a mistake.

I've taken this on board, chatted with Mac Dude and will pull my head in.....again.

I've been growing more cynical and grumpy lately, moreso than usual and I think that's been reflected in some of my recent posts, including this one.

As such, I think rather than continue to take it out on the forum, the mods and the other members, I'll have a bit of a break from the forums and take stock.

Catch y'all later on ;)

No need for head pulling, I'm actually curious as to what's happened. I'm tossing up between you being confused as to which thread you made a particular post in, or a mod accidentally deleting your post. Since it looks like I was the only mod who handled the thread being RTM'ed, then it would have to have been my mistake.

So it's between you and me buddy :D
