Off topic posts...

sorry for having a rant guys, but i am finding myself a little annoyed with the way some people post and was wondering if anyone else feels the same way.

for example, someone posts a question about why they cant get their 1066 ram up to 1066mhz and they get flamed for "wasting" their money on ram.

another asks a question about which brand of a particular nvidia card is better and gets flamed for "wasting" their money on a non-ati video card.

then there's the constant "fan-boi" labelling exercises, the personal attacks, the constant sh!t-stirring..

there are so many intelligent people on this forum (no, seriously) that post so much useful information and provide so many great answers for others. unfortunately, there are a select few keyboard warriors who like to use the anonymity the internet provides to attack others without fear or retribution. i feel that these people tend to ruin what would otherwise be a civil environment.

but i guess thats the problem with @$$h0l3s and opinions - everyones got one...

...your thoughts?

I voted for number three.

I tend to stay away from obviously fanboyish threads that inevitably degrade into petty name-calling anyway.

SyKRyD: If you feel that someone is taking the thread way off topic and being overly negative, RTM the post. In the first example you mentioned, I'd RTM it. The second I would RTM depending on the context.

i'm perfectly fine with OT content.

multi-threading, if you will, can work for many pages as long as people keep track of various loose ends and not disrespect the OP by forgetting to touch base on the main topic and/or acknowledge a hijack.

if you don't like OT posts, just RTM them saying they're OT, the mods will decide whether to remove the post or warn the poster.

*raises his hand to being Mr. Negative*

I will usually point out that people who buy DDR2-1066 RAM are wasting their money. Some people like to be blissfully ignorant of the sheer wastefulness of such things, but I know if I was in their shoes, I'd rather be told straight so I can make a more informed decision in the future.

And some people do deserve a flaming, rather than polite informing. Act like a toss, get treated like a toss. It's the way things have always been, and the way things should be, if you ask me.

So you're happy flaming someone because of the product they bought?

Man, some of you people need to get outside more.

Especially over something as stupid as what speed RAM people buy...

This thread reminds me of chocolate.

Oh, err, and I don't care about people going off-topic so long as it was a logical flow.

Theres a line here that is often crossed...

Sometimes a thread goes OT.. it either

a) reduces to spam and name calling

OR

b) is a side branch to the OP and can be informative.

The spam ones generally get RTM'd and either locked or have posts deleted.. the others generally stay open and result in an educational read.

@~thehung summed it up nicely I think.

Pretty much. The ones who shout loudest about OT tend to be the ones that are losing the argument.

lol.. alrite, who voted "cheese?"??

thanks to those who pointed out the rtm.. i'd rather avoid doing that unless in extreme cases as i would prefer free speech on these forums over censorship.

i dont feel that anyone deserves to get flamed. acting like a toss because someone else is acting like a toss just makes a bad situation worse. i would prefer if the mature would continue to act mature rather than get drawn in.

having said all this, i have to admit, i too can find some of the ot threads interesting. especially when i see a lock thread - its entertaining to read. however, it does get repetitive at times when its the same argument over 20 threads..

on the "money wasting" issue, i think anyone here who says that someone else is wasting money for buying this over that is ironic.. at the end of the day, as enthusiasts arent we all "wasting" money? one way or another, it doesnt matter what we buy, someone is going to its a waste of money. be it computer parts, cars, or in the case of my partner shoes and handbags

RTM is not auto-censorship. RTMing, is basically "what do you think, mods", in a button.

Effectively, when you RTM, you bring something directly to the attention of the mod team, and explain what the beef is in a concise message. If you think something is not to your liking, feel free to RTM it. We won't remove every post RTMed, all it does is direct our 'gaze'.

sorry, my definition of censorship was referring more to the control component rather that the actual censoring.

whether a post is removed or not, its content of what stays and goes is still being controlled so would still fall under my own definition of censorship.

in this instance, i would only resort to that in extreme cases. at the end of the day, prevention is better than cure..

Okay. Well, whether you RTM it or not, it's still being censored by the mods (by your definition). So you may as well help us make our censorship as beneficial and useful as possible and RTM :)

I don't flame people for what they buy. I may, and often do point out the insanity of it, but I don't flame them.

I will, however, speak bluntly and in no uncertain terms to people who post seeking advice, get lots of excellent advice and then proceed to dismiss it. Waste peoples time and you deserve to get grizzled at.
