Locking news threads when a second one gets posted

I don't think we need to worry, or even discuss, changing locking duplicate threads, its a good system, and works well, and the OPer wasn't getting at that either, from what I could see. But it would make life easier for everyone if news posts even contained just a single keyword about the story, then again, forum search works too...

I agree. But it's normally the first post on the topic stays no matter what the title.

But yes,good point.

is this a rule though? because its a valid point. there's nothing more frustrating then having to back search by thread author, because the thread you want has a title with nothing in common to the topic at hand.

well, ok, there are some more frustrating things (looks at peggle), but this is fairly high up.

No hard and fast rule. But common sense says last thread will be locked unless of course the first thread has gone badly off topic then it would be locked.

It didn't happen in this case. There has been times where I've locked the first thread on a topic and left the second run its course.

ya, i was thinking that would be a better method of determining which to lock.

Of course, allowing the mods to decide on their discretion which thread to lock, and to make a 'judgement call' on it isn't going to raise opposition :P

The title should be factored in.

I think if we locked the stupidly titled thread and indicated that it was locked because it had a stupid, uninformative title, even if it was the first to hit the forums, this might encourage people to put a little more thought into their thread titles.

If it's a new piece of news, too, then a look at just thread titles should be sufficient to verify if it's already been posted. The forum search isn't known for being the most reliable thing around.

On the surface, that's a good idea. I've seen really well titled and fleshed out threads locked in favour of a shallow, badly constructed thread simply because it was there first. So on the surface, it doesn't sound that bad :-)

However, the problem is then transferred to the mods, who have to interpret the rules and make a judgement call. How often do you think the mods would come under fire because their idea of what constitutes a well thought-out thread title/OP differs from the poster who has his or her thread locked, or their cheer squads?

I'm not a fan of hard and fast rules, and it's been my understanding that the application of the rules and guidelines are handled more on a case-by-case basis, rather than one size fits all. However, I think it would probably end up being a worse idea to flex the rules this much so as to rely on the mods interpretation in a given situation.

The current system may not be perfect and the downside is we do end up shutting down some really well thought out threads. At the end of the day, however, I think if we expect the mods to rely on interpretation with little more defense when questioned than, "well, I thought this other title was betterer," we also open them up for prime target practice. And if we do end up with an unscrupulous mod one day (fool us all, can ye?), then we also open the position up to abuse.

Hey, I'm not saying this for the mods. They've got hands. I'm saying this for me. I'm bored, I think people need a new crusade :-)

give the mods the power to modify thread titles.

is that a better solution?
Lock the duplicate and rename the vague thread title one. That way both parties win.

Party 1: the one that created it first, and already has enough people responding to the thread to not be locked.

Party 2: created late but more effective title.

Alternatively, leave the better-named second thread unlocked and don't lock either.

This I like :-)
A side effect of this might be an increased request load for the mods as people make little typos and want the mods to correct them (then the related outcries of, "I only wanted one little change and the mods never done it, it wouldn't take much time, horrible awful nasty modsses!"). However, on the whole I think mods being endowed with title edit powers might be a good move forward. edit: well, of course it sounds good to me, I wouldn't be the one receiving any potential increase in requests! :-p

Nope, do not want. Then we would get parallel discussions which makes things confusing and messy for anyone trying to participate.

This would probably be a good idea, and would likely solve many of the issues.

A format along the lines of:

Subject: [NEWS] <headline>

Message body: Source URL, then text of the news item, then OP's comments at the bottom.

While people have an aversion to hard-and-fast rules/guideliens, I think there's very little to argue about wwith something like this and it's not an unreasonable request, especially given that it ultimately improves the forums by making news posts clear.

I also think mods being able to change thread titles would be an excellent thing.

Let the Atomicans decide which thread they want to post in.
