Better moderation of the OSS forum

If posted guidelines worked, nobody would break the FAQ. A number of suggested guidelines are already in the FAQ in fact, so I doubt repeating them would help. People learn better from experience than being told something they will forget anyway...

Yep, we need rules, yep we have *some*, will more help....?

What's the point of having any guidelines for any forum then?

It wouldn't hurt to be more positive. While they may not help, they certainly wont hurt.

Fanboyism is the reason for the existence of the OSS forum. If you can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

I think I already answered this : "Yep, we need rules, yep we have *some*, will more help....? "

But what I said was useful my dear. Because if you followed my advice, your blood pressure would be quite a bit lower I'd wager.

Back to my original answer then.

Some of the suggested rules you have posted are already in the FAQ. Why do we need to repeat them? Often people don't read the rules when they join a forum, in fact I think that's the default behavior. So repeating the site rules in one forum in particular is unlikely to change behavior IMO.

And for everybody in this thread, can we play nicely please.

It was suggested I craft some of my own rules, which I did.

Many of the guidelines in other subforums also have redundant rules, but customized for the posting that takes place in their.

Which rules in particular do you think are redundant, and if they were modified or replaced, do you think they would have any worth?

Basically TheSecret:

You're not going to be able to change a thing.

Short of the *od's deciding that fan-boi-ism is worth a banning, it'll take place. Even then, it STILL will take place, only with more bannings.

Crafting more rules and regulations will only make the Mod's job harder, hence my above post [although I really just wanted an excuse to use that phrase].

Very little will change, it's up to the *od's to decide whether it's worth the hassle. Hence, as has been shown to you, the RTM function comes into play.

*shrugs

I just learn to not let things like that bother me.

'cept for a kajillion iPhone threads.

*winks at the mods :P

TheSecret: I think the guidelines you wrote seem fine and reasoanble.

Go ahead and post them if you like, and if you ask nicely, it might even be stickied.

That said, I don't think it'll make a lick of difference because people probably won't pay any attention to them, no matter how well they're written or who they're written by.

You can, at the very least direct people who make shitty posts to them, and that's about the best you can probably hope for. But even then, I think most of the people who are going to make those mistakes will be newcomers and will rapidly get told the shortcomings of their posts and how to improve them in the future.

The idea is good, but it's a bit of a lost cause.

1shot1kill,

Never mentioned you by name buddy.

Girvo,

I would have thought it was the other way around, the RTM function won't do much, since the mods are so busy deleting threads and posts, that at least even if they could point users to guidelines it could help.

Eckythump,

Thankyou. That is all I was trying to do, and some people just take it as an attack. I think mac dude has a good point, and they ae simply repeating some of the general rules. Would you have any suggested edits? I am aware it is a lost cause, but I am optimistic.

That's a new one :/

The Mod's RELY on it there. And if it's just guidelines, they're not enforcable, thus pointless to all but the nicest people really.

Most of the topics I've been involved in there are pretty much "how do I do X in Y".

Whenever fanboi-ism is posted, it usually gets shot down on its technical merit pretty quickly.

I agree on that point, read a fair bit over there, have to see it's one of the better sections, particularly regarding stuff like fanboys :/

Bit late here but given I am constantly in OSS I figure I would say something.
So....

What are you talking about?
If you want to see fanboyism then check out the GPU or CPU areas!

There are a few times when things flare up but they quickly settle down when a *od drops a word or two, but even a little fire is good every now and again. There certainly hasn't been anything of merit that I can recall since setaglib. You would have loved him ;)

Otherwise what the other mods said goes.
