Yeah well you can try doing it like "s**t" in the title but apparently that shit doesn't fly either.

Do mods have the ability to edit titles?

No.

Maybe we should add this ability.

We? I don't know how, but if you do, go right ahead. We might be able to get Dan to sort it, but he's kinda busy for the foreseeable.

LOL 1shot you know what I meant.

Yeah, I guess we will have to wait a while. Perhaps it can be added to our v3.0 wishlist?

Originally, they said that changing the thread title would confuse people, but honestly, it can't confuse people more than moving them does.

As said, other forums handle it well, even thread authors can change their titles.

I know the mods will often PM the OP contents in case they want to start the thread with a different title, but all the other posts are gone.

Midnighter: While I consider shit a tame word, I still consider it a swear word. If you wouldn't say it in front of teachers at school, in a church, etc, then it's probably safe to assume it's not fit for thread titles.

I agree that it'd be better if mods could edit a thread title to preserve a thread, rather than just blowing it all away. I acknowledge that people should know the rules, but it's easy to forget over time, and when yo usee what's allowed within threads, it's not unreasonable for someone to overlook this one.

That said, I do find the rule a bit lame. I understand it came about due to a community request, but I still don't really get it. My understanding is that it came about for the purpose of "work-friendly" viewing of atomic forums, and I don't really see how that's possible. Sure, a thread with "cunt" in the title is likely not the kind of thing you should look at while at work, but you see that word and every other variety of crassness and profanity arise in threads about anythign and everything. Factor in the people who have profanity, jokes/rhymes/etc about rape/sexual assault, etc. in their sig, and you can pretty much kiss work-friendliness goodbye.

Being able to hide signiatures wouldn't solve this, either, but it'd help and I'd love to see this implemented as a user preferences option.

Alternately, an opt-in profanity filter might be appealing for @work browsers.

It's all to do with the space/time continuum.

or, because it's not broken :)

It's simple, think before you post, or if you are unsure ask a mod (a number of people already have).

No, it really is.
It's something that wasn't thought of at the beginning and it's a usability nightmare.

Most of the Web Dev team could fix it, most of the programmers here could fix it too - and I'm not nearly as skilled as half of those people. But it's haymarket's property and they'll do with it as they please. As has been made abundantly clear quite a few people think this forum is a perfect example of usability and wouldn't know what's a good idea and what's not if it hit them in the face =P

Not everything can be predicted at the outset of ANYTHING, let alone a forum - especially a hand-coded one.

Yes they could (if it needed fixing) but their time is not just spent on atomic, but all of the sites on Haymarkets network (to my knowledge. Please correct me if I'm wrong).

That's a lot of sites that they devote their time to. Adding a function like thread title editing is not high on the list. Especially since it's not a fix, but a trivial feature.

If only they realised that the internets are serious business. If they knew that, it would've been fixed years ago! :p

I think you misunderstand me.
I'm not saying any of us should fix it.
I'm just saying it's one of many usability issues this codebase suffers from that's implemented on many other forums and is almost EXACTLY THE SAME as the EDIT POST function.

You've got that right. The incredible aversion to change/progress is hard to rationally comprehend sometimes. It seems people would much prefer working around issues, be they big or small than actually see them fixed.

But we've been down this road a thousand times before. V3? heh! I bet we won't see it for another 18 months at the very least.
