You’d be amazed at the things I can do because people assume I’m senile, but the joke’s on them because I’m nowhere close to senile yet.

It's not more that 2 months definitely.

I believe the FAQ is due for a fix for that at some point.

Assume 2 (TWO) months and don't go extremely close would be your best bet. :)

I mean he started up another stupid thread when the other one would have been sufficient.

Of course, lucky for him :P, the other thread appears to be just too old.

um....WHY?

i cant stand it any longer and need to know! apparently it should be obvious, but i am thick sometimes. i dont care about whether the rule is 2 or 3 months, but quite simply ive never understood why bumping in general is such a deadly faux pas .

yes, whenever bumpage occurs all manner of vicious kitten-destroying hoodoo, voodoo, and juju is released onto the internets. it reminds me of the way some native peoples react to photos of deceased persons. are there really people out there so sensitive to the reappearance of old threads?

"Oh noes! This thread is meant to be dead, and I thought it was dead, but it isn't dead, because some unthinking arsehole has resurrected it. I feel sick inside. I feel emotionally manipulated! [insert old forum member] isn't really back, and Duke Nukem Forver won't really be coming out by Christmas! Waaah!"

later forum revisions even included the [BUMPED!] prefix to prevent such tragedies. but this is not enough. the crime still continues to wreak havoc.

of course, old threads could be locked automatically, but this would prevent "bumping for the right reasons" -- although everyone knows that this is a dark esoteric art fraught with the danger of getting it wrong and destroying the lives of innocents. :P

I can't understand why bumpers cant be warned by the forum code.

You said that you can't understand why bumpers can't be warned by the forum code. You said that bumpers can't be warned by the forum code.

If the forum code allows it (I don't know either way), we have this little problem of a shortage of webdev time & manpower.

Why?

Wouldn't it be better to read it and see if it's staying on topic, first, to not waste the time of mods?

I don't think so, no. If it's on topic and relevant, it's not my call. The mods are going to get the shits with me for saying this, but I've bumped threads that have been on topic and relevant and have been locked.

That's fine, I can live with it, but it's their call as to what needs to be locked or not. All I do is bring it to their attention.

FAQ -- "9. Bumping old threads. Posting in a thread more than three months old is severely frowned upon . Better to start a new thread, and open up a fresh discussion. If in doubt, ask a mod."

i know my question above is slightly off-topic, but can anyone offer an explanation as to why bumping is so reviled?

Because there's a bump tag, mr hung, and that makes people turn into screaming retards.

Back in the days of yore, before there were bump tags, people would occasionally post in threads without realising the date of it.

That, and as a rule, the forum search function used to suck donkey cock, and so you couldn't search within threads, let alone most thread topics.

One of those things where the solution, IMO, was worse than the problem.
